Paladins Squad

The Paladins Squad was revealed in Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe A to Z #13 and never appeared or was mentioned on panel. Only two members of the group have been confirmed (Armor and Wing). Some online sources cite Blindfold as well, though this is not supported in text. Armor and Wing were both creations of Cassady/Whedon and debuted in his Astonishing X-Men series but the timeline for the series is problematic due to various delays. It can be assumed that the squad was disbanded post M-Day like all the other squads.

A “paladin” is “a person who fights for a cause as a knight fought for a king in the Middle Ages.”

Instructor:

Shadowcat (Katherine Pryde)

First Appearance: X-Men (1st series) #129

Powers: phase her molecules into intangibility, letting her move through objects, walk on air, and disrupt electronic systems

Notes:

  • While we never saw Kitty lead/train her squad, despite her age she was a very good choice. Kitty has an extensive educational background and diverse combat training as a ninja. She also later became the headmistress of the Jean Grey School for Gifted Youngsters.

Members

Armor (Hisako Ickiki)

First appearance: Astonishing X-Men (3rd series) #4

Powers: psionic exo-armor increases her physical strength, magnifies the force behind her blows, and protects her from a significant degree of physical harm

Notes:

  • Hisako was shown to have a bright future ahead of her as the leader of the X-Men. In Runaways (2nd series) #2, a time-traveling future version of Runaways’ member Arsenic (Gertrude Yorkes) recounted how a nefarious villain managed to defeat Hisako’s team of X-Men.
  • At the conclusion of Whedon/Cassady's Astonishing X-Men run, Armor took Kitty Pryde's place on the line up (Kitty had been lost in space at the conclusion of the run). This spotlight was temporary, however, and she not had a great “push” in profile for some time.
  • Armor was available to vote for in the first two Hellfire Gala votes but lost to Polaris and Firestar respectively.
  • Armor had a close friendship with Wing and was very angry about his death. She eventually confronted Danger in Nation X #3.

Wing (Edward Tancredi)

First appearance: Astonishing X-Men (3rd series) #3

Powers: self-propelled flight

Notes:

  • When Wing first tried to land after flying, he broke both his legs.
  • Wing’s powers were neutralized by the alien warrior called Ord in Astonishing X-Men (3rd series) #4.
  • Wing committed suicide inside a Danger Room simulation of the campus in Astonishing X-Men (3rd series) #7.
  • Armor teased Wing for having a crush on Kitty Pryde.
