Trevor -- Your adaptation of Jamie Madrox seems to have hit a chord with the fans. What do you think it is about Madrox that attracts the fans to him?

Peter David -- I think many of them can sympathize with the notion of a hero who isn't sure what to do at any given moment, and is sometimes paralyzed by the options presented him. That's something of a universal concern, particularly among young people.

Trevor -- How long have you known that you were going to be doing a new X-Factor book?

Peter David -- It was certainly something Andy and I were aiming for when we first did Madrox. I think Andy told me we were a go around the time that Madrox #5 was hitting the stands.

Trevor -- How did the preverbal ball get rolling with this one? Was the characters and concept something you brought to them in a pitch, or did they come to you and ask what you would be interested in writing?

Peter David -- Andy was entirely the one who got the ball rolling. He literally willed the Madrox limited series into existence. When the sales were respectable enough to suggest an X-Factor ongoing would be successful, Andy and I then batted around the possibilities of who else would be on the team. Madrox, Wolfsbane and Guido were givens, but the rest was up in the air. Eventually he provided me with a list of possible members, and we discussed them before settling on the line-up we now have.

Trevor -- The solicits for issue #2 come with questions that need to be answered, so I'm turning them back around on you (since I figured you WOULD be the one in the KNOW).

Peter David -- Well, sure, I know them, but the whole idea of posing the questions in the solicits is to get people to buy the book. If I spell them out, then there's no reason for people to do so.

Trevor -- What is THE bizarre secret of Singularity Investigations and their boss, Mr. Tryp?

Peter David -- No, what is the name of the man on second.

Trevor -- Has Jamie Madrox turned homicidal?

Peter David -- Maybe. Maybe not.

Trevor -- Who is Layla Miller and how does she know stuff?

Peter David -- I won't tell you that, but I'll tell you this: My goal is to have Layla Miller be the most talked-about character in the X-universe by issue #6 of X-Factor.

Trevor -- Who is Gloria Santiago and what's going on with her sister?

Peter David -- Gloria is X-Factor's new client, and that's what she wants to know.

Trevor -- Will Rahne give in to her temptation to kick Monet's butt?

Peter David -- I'm thinking eventually, yeah.

Trevor -- Can X-Factor's investigation of the "Decimation" possibly yield the mystery of the HOUSE OF M?

Peter David -- Could be.

Trevor -- Jamie was an investigator in Mutant Town, now that town has been "decimated" what kind of jobs will he taking on now?

Peter David -- For starters, the residents of Mutant Town are now extremely vulnerable. People who have lived in fear of Mutants, or might have grudges against them, are now seeing a chance for a little payback. And X-Factor will likely be the first and last line of defense against any such endeavors. In addition, there will be those who were once mutants who now have whole news sets of problems, and need X-Factor to intervene in smaller problems. Furthermore, X-Factor will be investigating the origins of the Decimation...which will bring them into conflict with certain individuals who want to keep things under wraps.

Trevor -- Were there any characters you wanted to use, but told they were already taken?

Peter David -- Yes. Batman.

Trevor -- Many X-Fans consider your original X-Factor run the pinnacle of the original series. How is the new X-Factor different? How does it feel to return to these characters in a completely different setting?

Peter David -- For starters, we're not going quite so much for laughs as we were the first series. This doesn’t mean that there won’t be a sense of fun to it, particularly in terms of character interaction. But the mutant world has undergone a sea of change, and much of the interaction deals with people trying to get their bearings in a frightening new environment.

Trevor -- Why Layla Miller and how does she fit in with the
new X-Factor?

Peter David -- Because she's an X-Factor. Literally. There's so much that's unknown about her, and X-Factor is fundamentally about exploring the unknown. So it's good to have a representative of the unknown as part of the team.

Trevor -- Many characters you created during your run on X-Factor may no longer be mutants after the effects of HOUSE OF M. As a creator, how does it feel to have these characters no longer available to play with or revisit?

Peter David -- What makes you think I can't visit or play with them? For that matter, what makes you assume that all the members of X-Factor are still mutants? Because you're proceeding from a false assumption.
