Christina Weir & Nunzio DeFilippis Interview !!!
Author : Iceman (Trevor Cates)Last Modified : November 5th 2003
In March of 1983 a creator named Chris Claremont started a series called The New Mutants. The series was about a group of teenagers whom Xavier decided to take under his wing and train them in the use of their powers. Over the years the writers changed and so did the line-up and in April of 1991 the students decided to leave the mansion and fight for a man named Cable. Xavier would have another group of teenagers to train, but thats not the story I'm getting to. In July of 2003 two creators by the names of Nunzio DeFilippis and Christina Weir were chosen to bring some of Xavier's first New Mutants back to the Mansion to train Xavier's new class of mutants. These two writers have joined the X-Franchise in a time when tremendous change has rocked the world of our favorite mutants and they are facing that change head on. Coming up with insightful and entertaining stories every month (as they have) has kept them busy, but thankfully they have taken their time to genously offer us at UXN an interview.

Iceman -- What are your plans for Rahne in the near future?

CW: -- Rahne is returning. She will be without her powers and she will be dealing with how she feels about that. Expect her return in Issue 10. She's on the cover and will actually be in the issue this time.

Iceman -- Where is this (so-called) teacher-student relationship headed and when can we expect to see its occurrence?

CW -- Well, it's not a relationship so much as it is a mutual attraction and some sparkage of the good and bad variety. Look for it in the second arc.

Iceman -- Do you have plans for Magneto's return in the New X-Men series to impact the New Mutants title?

ND -- We won't be dealing with Magneto or the actual events of Planet X. Instead we will be dealing with the fallout. Our second arc was plotted with no knowledge of what Grant was going to do, so people are going to have to strain their brains to find a way to fit this arc (which occurs in the fall semester several months after our first arc) before the events of Planet X. Then our third arc will start (in Issues 13 & 14) by showing how the school has changed in the wake of Planet X.

Iceman -- Also while on the subject of Grant Morrison's run. Do you have any definite plans on when you plan on handing over the reigns (hopefully not for a long time)?

ND -- Right now? We'd have to say never. But that doesn't really happen in comics. We see ourselves having many years of stories for these kids. Plus we actually look forward to the continuity nightmare of 'do we let them graduate and introduce new students?' So we're not even thinking about handing over the reins just yet.

Officially, we and Marvel are committed to Issue 18. But as I said, we're committed for much longer and hopefully Marvel will make the same commitment.

Iceman -- On our site we have a place called the Current Title Info. In the New Mutants portion of it Peter Luzifer has provided a PIC of the characters to be arriving. Are there going to be any changes to the roster? If so can you give us any insight to whom or when these changes may occur?

CW -- Kevin, as you know, has already left the school. He will be back in the future. The second arc has the arrival of a new character, Noriko as well as the return of Rahne. Also one of the characters we had intended to be part of the book will be leaving in the second arc. We can't really talk about that yet.

In the third arc, we may or may not pick up one of Grant's students as a semi-regular or even a regular. We're still discussing it with editorial. We'll let you know more when we know more.
