Runaways

Nunzio and Christina Say Good-Bye to the New X-Men !!!
Author : Trevor CatesLast Modified : 6-6-05
Trevor --How long have you known about your departure from New X-Men?

ND --We found out about it in late April. Just before my birthday, if you can believe that! We were asked to sit on the news because Marvel was going to use the Philly con to announce the new team. We didn't know who the new team was until a few weeks ago, though.

Trevor --How hard is it to continue writing for a comic title that you know you won't be on after the next few issues?

ND --It wouldn't be so hard if we weren't doing a crossover. Don't get me wrong, I'm enjoying the story we're telling in House of M, but once we knew that our run on the book was ending, we kept wishing we could have used our last issues to tell some of the stories we'd been setting up.

Trevor --What are the things you'll be missing from your work on both New Mutants and New X-Men?

CW --The characters. We got the chance to create a whole new stable of characters for the Marvel universe and we were with them for almost three years (and 37 issues of stories including the Hellions mini). It's hard to say goodbye. Unfortunately, the end of our run coincided with the House of M crossover, so we don't have nearly the time we'd like to wrap up our stories. Marvel is giving us one issue to try to close things out. It's going to be a Yearbook issue of sorts that will come out probably late this summer. We're very glad to have this opportunity, but we wish we could have had a few more issues to do things more fully.

Trevor --Can you tell the fans what plans you had for the title and where it would have gone if it was still in your hands?

CW --Well, some of the interpersonal stuff for the characters will be dealt with in the Yearbook issue, so we don't want to talk about that too much right now. The biggest plotline that we won't get to pursue is the arrival of Sean Garrison. While we don't know specifically what the new writers have planned for the book, we don't expect them to pick up our plot threads. Garrison was slated to be our next big villain and what would happen between him and Laurie would be front and center. What would Laurie's mom do about the arrival of Garrison in Salem Center? When would Laurie learn the truth? How would she react? Those are the questions we would have been dealing with. But we can talk more about what would have been the various characters' futures after the Yearbook issue comes out.

Trevor --What are your thoughts on Craig Kyle and Chris Yost? Have you had the chance to talk to them?

CW --I think they are both very talented writers. I enjoyed their X-23 miniseries and I was a fan of X-Men Evolution. I wish them both a lot of luck with the book. Nunzio has talked briefly with Chris who has been very gracious, but we don't really know what their plans are.

Trevor --What will happen to you two now? What are you going to do? Will you stay in comics? Or go back to film work?

ND --No way we leave comics. We're working with some editors at both DC and Marvel to get our next superhero projects up and running. We're feeling pretty hopeful about one DC project in particular, but not so hopeful that we'd jinx it by talking about it as if it's a done deal. But we also hope to keep working in the X-verse and maybe work with Mike Marts again. We're also making inroads at Vertigo for some non-superhero fare, stuff closer to our Oni work in tone and maturity level. Speaking of Oni, we've got a LOT coming out with them and with Seven Seas over the next year. Expect an Oni OGN called Past Lies, plus Amazing Agent Luna Volume 2, and a new manga from Seven Seas this year. Then Once In A Blue Moon Volume 2 and a new (currently untitled) Oni book, plus even more Agent Luna next year.

CW --We're also pursuing TV possibilities, with a producer interested in discussing ideas for SKINWALKER and talks with a big time animation house for some original series ideas. And we've got a couple of our books in play in the film world, with Oni's new producing partners getting some momentum on some of our old books and gearing up to take our new books around Hollywood.
