| Carol Danvers has lived a unique life. She is a woman of extraordinary strength, intelligence and determination and has overcome more than her fair share of hardships. She’s been kidnapped, tortured, raped, de-powered, genetically toyed with, and a serious alcoholic. Despite it all, she has always struggled onward and bounced back from the tragedies that have defined her. This inner strength and resilience has become a defining aspect of who she is. Carol Danvers has been many things in her life: a spy, a NASA security chief, a writer, a superhero… even an intergalactic freedom fighter. She’s served with the Avengers, the Starjammers and been a frequent ally of the X-Men. She fought alongside the Avengers as Ms. Marvel and Warbird and soared the stars as Binary. But despite her varied career and adventures, she’s never quite lived up to her full potential.
Now Carol Danvers has come full circle and is determined to become the heroine she knows she can be. Reclaiming her original Ms. Marvel name, Carol has decided to take charge of her life and focus all her energies on becoming the A-List superhero she’s always dreamed of being. Not just the kind of hero who flies in and saves the day, but one of the iconic few who inspires the rest… the best of the best. Ms. Marvel now leads the Mighty Avengers as well as her own pro-active strike team: Operation: Lightning Storm. This team allows Ms. Marvel to strike out at villains before they become a major threat!
Regular Creative Team: Brian Reed (writer), Aaron Lopresti (penciler)
Characters
Ms. Marvel I (Carol Susan Jane Danvers) Powers: genetic experiments by the Brood gave her the power to access the energies of a white hole, which she can utilize to augment her strength, stamina, reflexes and durability, manipulate anti-gravitons for flight, project stellar energy blasts, and absorb electromagnetic energy signatures to temporarily boost all of her powers. Possesses an accelerated healing factor of undetermined origins.
Notes: - Carol received her original Ms. Marvel powers from exposure to the energies of the Kree Psyche-Magnitron. Years later, these powers were stolen by Rogue. Carol gained new powers when she was subjected to genetic manipulations by the Brood. As Binary, she had phenomenal cosmic powers that rivaled those of the Heralds of Galactus. These powers eventually waned and she now possesses power-levels that are more comparable to her original power set. - Ms. Marvel is one of the most well-connected heroes around! She’s the Kevin Bacon of the Marvel Universe with strong ties to the Avengers, S.H.I.E.L.D., the Thunderbolts, the alien Kree, the X-Men and she even served the Shi’ar Empire alongside the Starjammers.
Supporting Cast
Wonder Man (Simon Williams)
Powers: ionic bombardment treatment has converted him into a being of pure ionic energy, with enormous strength, tireless stamina, enhanced speed and reflexes, nigh-invulnerability, and self-propelled flight
Notes: - Simon Williams was a shady industrialist before his transformation into the ionic-powered hero, Wonder Man. He was originally empowered by Baron Zemo to destroy the Avengers but sided with Earth’s Mightiest heroes in the climactic battle against Zemo’s Masters of Evil. He died having saved the team. This was the first of many deaths and resurrections in his career. - In addition to being a card-carrying member of the Avengers and assisting Ms. Marvel with Operation: Lightning Storm, Simon is a Hollywood actor. He has starred in numerous action movies most notably a series based on Arkon!
Araña (Anya Corazon)
Powers: mystical connection to the Great Weaver gives her superhuman strength, speed, agility, endurance, reflexes, balance, and coordination, and the ability to cling to solid surfaces and scale walls with her hands and feet, carries a spider-shaped bola-hook
Notes: - Anya Corazon was recruited by the mysterious mystics known as the Spider Society and imbued with spider-like abilities to combat evil. - Anya lost her mother at a young age and looks up to Ms. Marvel as a mentor and mother figure. - After Araña was gravely injured battling Carol’s enemy the Doomsday Man, her father Gilberto obtained a restraining order barring Ms. Marvel from any further contact with his teenaged daughter.
Beast (Henry Phillip McCoy)
Powers: de-evolutionary regressive mutation gives him enormous physical mass, superhuman strength, speed, agility, endurance, reflexes, dexterity and intelligence, cat-like vision, enhanced hearing and sense of smell, accelerated healing abilities, thick blue fur, razor sharp fangs and claws on his fingers and toes
Notes: - Hank McCoy has a doctorate in genetics and is a world-renowned scientist. - For a reason not currently understood, Beast has gone through a "secondary mutation", changing his appearance from ape-like to cat-like. - Hank and Carol have been good friends since they were teammates together in the Avengers. In recent years, Carol has relied on the Beast’s medical expertise to address the fluctuating nature of her powers as Ms. Marvel.
Agent Sum
Powers: The full extent of Agent Sum’s superhuman abilities has yet to be revealed, though superhuman durability and some degree of superhuman strength seem likely.
Notes: - Agent Sum was one of three SHIELD agents personally selected by Ms. Marvel to form the core of her Operation: Lightning Storm team. She has noted that his file is highly classified, presumably due to his enhanced physical abilities. - Agent Sum has a distinctive scar on the left side of his face starting at the corner of his mouth.
Sarah Day Powers: none, baseline human
Notes: - Sarah is a prominent publicist for Hollywood’s elite and a handful of superheroes. Besides Ms. Marvel, her super-powered clients include Captain America, the Fantastic Four and the Astonishing X-Men.
William Wagner
Powers: none revealed, presumed to be a baseline human
Notes: - William Wagner is a New York restaurant owner who began dating Carol Danvers after she wrecked his restaurant during one of her battles. To Carol’s surprise, he does not seem very interested in her life as a super-hero or the celebrity that comes with it. - Carol’s publicist Sarah Day investigated William and has discovered that he is living under an alias after relocating and taking great measure to change his identity and appearance. His true identity and history have yet to be revealed.
Recent events (up to #20) In recent years, Carol Danvers has served as an Avenger under the name Warbird and overcome a serious problem with alcoholism. Having given up drinking and atoned for her mistakes while under the influence, Carol focused on being the best Avenger she could be. This led to an offer to serve as the Chief Tactical Officer and Superhuman Liaison for the Department of Homeland Security. All these accomplishments were great honors and achievements by anyone’s standards.
However, when the Scarlet Witch warped reality and created a world ruled by the “House of M “, Carol Danvers found herself cast in the role of the world’s greatest superhero! Eventually, reality was returned to normal, but Carol Danvers awoke the next day fully aware of all that transpired. More importantly, she had glimpsed her true potential as a heroine and the important role she could play in the world.
Choosing to turn this fantasy life into a reality, Carol quit her position with Homeland Security and has returned to her classic costume and original codename as Ms. Marvel. Ms. Marvel has decided she’s not satisfied being an unknown second-stringer but wants to be the best. To help her get there, she’s hired a top publicist who manages superhuman clients and started to take the initiative as a super-heroine. After some random battles against old foes like the Brood and the Doomsday Man and new manaces such as the alien Cru and the dimension-hopping mystic Warren Traveler, Carol found herself knee-deep in the superhuman Civil War.
Siding with Iron Man during the conflict spawned by the Superhuman Registration Act, Carol was forced to fight her friends and wrestle with the moral ambiguities presented by government oversight of superhuman activity. She was particularly troubled by her role in apprehending the former Avenger, Julia Carpenter aka Arachne. Despite these internal conflicts, Ms. Marvel has strived to represent the best that The Initiative has to offer. She has taken on a role as a trainer for young recruits like Araña and has assumed leadership of the Mighty Avengers. Still lacking a personal focus in her life, Ms. Marvel struck a deal with Iron Man that allowed her to form her own pro-active strike team… Operation: Lightning Storm! This ad-hoc team of SHIELD agents and superhuman recruits has already faced the forces of AIM and is now engaged in an operation to take down the Puppet Master.
