Marrow was originally supposed to have the codename "Sheathe" but the editors nixed it because they thought it had a too heavy sexual overtone. - Submitted by Binaryan

Before See Brotherhood of Evil Mutants I for Magneto, all other characters are new. In Avengers (1st series) #53 Magneto fell into the ocean and did not reappear.
Chronology | Uncanny X-Men #62: | Amphibius discovers a crashlanded Angel in the Savage Land, he brings him to the creator. Meanwhile the other X-Men meet with Kazar. The Creator is avble tio revive the dead on arrival Angel. He is intoduced to the other mutates Barbarus, Lupo, Gaza, Brainchild, Piper and Equilibrius. The creator claims to search and train this mutants through the tribes of the Savage Land. Mutancy occurs here more often due to higher radiation levels. Unknown to the Angel the Creator is no other than Magneto ! He explains that he discovered caves beneath the ocean ground that led to the Savage Land. | | Uncanny X-Men #63: | The Savage Land mutates follow Angel, when he searches for his friends. Immediatly a battle starts. Angel flies back to the Creator to tell him to stop the battle, but witnesses the Creator designing another mutate - Lorelei. Magneto reveals himself to the Angel now. As the other X-Men arrive all are paralized due to Lortelei's powers, all except Jean, since the powers work only on males. Jean telekinatically graps holds of Cyclops visor, opens it, and destroys then building and the machines inside. Magneto is buried under the debris, the mutates revert back to mere swamp savages. | | X-Men Hidden Years #1,3: | Magneto uses his by radiation amplified psypowers to talk to Amphibius, who tells him that the X-Men are again in the Savage Land. | | X-Men Hidden Years #10-12: | Amphibius watches a fight between Sauron and Magneto. In the end Magneto is lost in an explosion, Amphibius reverts back to savage state, he states it was Magneto who held him in mutate form (might be due to his enhanced brain capabilities). | | Avengers (1st series) #105: | Searching for the missing Quicksilver the Avengers follow a false lead into the Savage Land. There they encounter the Savage Land Mutates. No explanation is given who evolved them back again. | | Avengers (1st series) #110-111: | Obviously Magneto himself re-evolved the Savage Land mutates since he and Piper not only capture the X-Men but half of the Avengers as well. In his arrogance Magneto does not care about the non mutant half of the Avengers and is defeated. |
In between Magneto returns to the Savage Land to take Lorelei with him to join his new line-up for the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants I (as can be seen in Defenders (1st series) #15) Piper never appears again. There was another Piper among the Morlocks who could be the same, though Thor writer Walter Simonson said that it was not intended. Sauron is a very old X-Foe. He appeared in many stories with the Savage Land theme. Examples are Uncanny X-Men #59-63, the above mentioned X-Men Hidden Years #6-7, 9-12 and Uncanny X-Men #115-116 too. His origin was in Uncanny X-Men #60. Zaladane appeared as a high priestess in various stories around the Savage Land like Astonishing Tales #3-5 and Uncanny X-Men #115-116.
Chronology continued | Marvel Fanfare (1st series) #1-2: | The Angel and Spiderman travel to the Savage Land, searching for Karl Lykos aka Sauron. Suddenly they are attacked by some of the Savage Land Mutates (Gaza, Barbarus, Vertigo, Amphibius and Brainchild) Brainchild was able to work on the machine that created them; now it is able to evolve and devolve as well. While they use the machine on their captives, Ka-Zar and Lykos come to the rescue. Karl soakes the mutagenic energys of Angel and Spiderman, freeing them, but also turning him to Sauron again. | | Marvel Fanfare (1st series) #3-4: | The Angel alerts the X-Men and together they again head for the Savage Land. Unknown to them Sauron, Zaladane and the Mutates now work together. The X-Men are taken prisoner. Again due to the help of Ka-Zar they are freed and Sauron can be reverted back to Karl Lykos. |
In between Vertigo appears as one of Sinister's Marauders. How this came to be is yet unknown.
Chronology continued | Uncanny X-Men Annual #12: | Zaladane and the Savage Land Mutates are plotting behind the High Evolutionary. | | Uncanny X-Men #249-250: | Attempting to contact Polaris in South America the X-Men have to face the Savage Land Mutates (with new member Whiteout), who arrived before them. Polaris gets kidnapped, Havok follows disguised as a savage soldier. Once in the Savage Land Zaladane claims to be Polaris's sister and steals her powers with a mechanical device designed by Brainchild after plans from the High Evolutionary. Havok is easily discovered and the following X-Men are captured by another new Mutate named Worm. Polaris suddenly develops superstrength as an aftereffect of the power transfer and saves the day. | | Uncanny X-Men #274-275: | The energy readings from the South magnetic pole go haywire. This is Zaladanes doing, who tries to gain more and more energy with Polaris's powers. Magneto, Rogue, Ka-Zar and Shield investigate and have to face the Mutates and Zaladane's forces. It seems that Barbarus and Whiteout share a relationship. After capturing Magneto, Zaladane wants to siphon his energys as well; but Rogue and Shield rescue him only to observe as he kills Zaladane cold-blooded. |
In between Karl Lykos was living a happy life with his girlfriend Tanya Anderssen till the day the Toad came and forced him to become Sauron again. He then worked for a time with the Toad's Brotherhood of Evil Mutants IV until he returned to the Savage Land.
Chronology continued | Wolverine (2nd series) #69-71: | Logan, Rogue and Jubilee travel to the Savage Land and try to find traces of Magneto. Instead they discover that Sauron took charge of the Savage Land Mutates again. He also united the variant savage tribes. After long fights the three X-Men win, but out of morals they choose not to reverse Sauron to Karl Lykos. | | X-Men Unlimited #6: | Sauron needs more and more energy. Since it was touching Havok that triggered his transformation the first time (way back in Uncanny X-Men #60), he sends Worm and Whiteout to kidnap him. Cyclops, Phoenix IV and Polaris follow. In the Savage Land Brainchild works on machines that would regulate the energy transfer when they arrive. Sauron is able to hypnotize the X-Men, making them battle each other, but in the end, Phoenix is able to enter his mind. Sauron becomes a mindless creature. | | X-Treme X-Men Savage Land #1-4: | Brainchild becomes aware of the X-Treme X-men helping a race of Saurids to resettle into the Savage Land. Wanting revenge for earlier defeats, he triggers a floodwave to seperate the X-Men. He captures Storm and turns her into a mindless savage, while new members Lupa and Leash use their manipulative powers on some of the other X-Men. Finally the Savage Land Mutates attack the community where Saurids and humans are trying to live together, but are defeated when the strongwilled Sage is able to reflect Leash’s power onto herself, thus taking control of her. The Mutates‘ lifes hang in the balance as various people of the community demand their death, but the X-Men do not allow murder and so they are arrested. |
Afterwards Sauron's mind of course reemerged and he came back to bother the X-Men again. (Uncanny X-Men #354-355) Vertigo being back with the Savage Land Mutates is left unexplained. As part of the Marauders she was killed and cloned various times. It’s doubtful that Sinister lets one of his clones return to the Savage Land, though it’s possible that the original Vertigo never left, and Sinister always has been working with clones of her.
