BIOGRAPHY - Page 1

Robert Louis Drake was born in Long Island, New York to William Robert and Madeline Beatrice. When Robert hit puberty, he started to manifest his powers. He was constantly feeling cold and shaking, until he managed to keep it under control. [X-Men Forever #3] He was on a date with a girl named Judy Harmon when they were attacked by the town bully, Rocky Beasely, and his gang. While the others held Bobby back, Rocky tried to force himself on Judy. To stop him, Bobby encased Rocky in a block of ice, revealing his mutant powers in front of others. Judy could not stand to be with a mutant and ran away.

Word spread of the incident and the townspeople broke into the Drake home and began to beat on Bobby. When the local sheriff arrived, he stopped the mob and placed Bobby in a jail cell for his own protection. That night, Scott Summers blew a hole through the wall of the jail and offered Bobby a place in the newly-formed X-Men team. Bobby rudely declined and the two began to battle when the mobs arrived and attacked the young mutants again. Professor Xavier stepped in, psionically freezing the mob in place. With a limited amount of convincing, Xavier persuaded Bobby to join the X-Men. [backstory in X-Men (1st series) #44-46]

Within two months, Warren Worthington III (Angel), Hank McCoy (Beast) and Jean Grey (Marvel Girl) joined the team and formed the original X-Men. Bobby participated in the team’s first battle with Magneto as the Iceman. [X-Men (1st series) #1]

Bobby quickly became the "class clown" of the group.

It was while hanging out in the Cafè A-Go-Go that Bobby first met the waitress, Zelda, and soon he and Hank would double date with her and Vera Cantor. [X-Men (1st series) #7]

Like his teammates Iceman improved the control over his mutant powers, and soon his original snowlike form hardened into an icelike almost transparent exterior. [X-Men (1st series) #8]

The team battled many more supervillains and finally Xavier granted them each their individual costume. Though, usually, not much of Bobby’s costume is visible, he now had white boots to match with his icy form. [X-Men (1st series) #39] Not much later the team was disbanded by FBI agent Fred Duncan, since Xavier had apparently been killed in a battle with the subhuman Grotesk. [X-Men (1st series) #42, 46]
