Topic: New Avengers members; no more original characters? Posted: 09-Dec-2011 at 1:48pm |

So I've revently noticed that since New Avengers debuted, there have been no original characters that have joined an Avengers roster. That is to say, no characters created in an issue of the Avengers have gone on to join the team. Ever since New Avengers debuted, there's been this pseudo Justice League vibe, that the teams are formed of well known characters, many of which are not from an Avengers background.
In the old days, if the writer wanted to add a new member to the roster, they would created them. These days though they're plucked from another title, or in some cases Comic Limbo. I'm curious whether people think this is because: a)The writers (Bendis mainly) are afraid people won't take to a new creation as much as they would an established character; or b) Bendis is making a conscious push to maintain that psuedo Justice League vibe for the team?
Hell, perhaps you think its something else entirely, I'm keen to know. Also do you think we should start seeing some fresh, original character blood on the teams? My fear is that if we continue down this road, eventually everyone will have had a turn as an Avenger. I mean at the moment we have three X-men, Spider Man, a member of the Fantastic Four and a Hulk on the teams.
Here's just some of the characters that have joined the avengers since Avengers Dissembled: Spider Man, Sentry, Wolverine, Luke Cage, Spider Woman, Echo (though the Ronin identity was new), Jessica Jones, Iron Fist, Doctor Strange, Ares, Stature, Young Vision, Bucky, Protector, Thing, Red Hulk, Ant Man, Moon Knight, Daredevil, Storm...The list goes on

Well maybe this is what your talking about with the "psuedo Justice League" thing, but it kind of makes sense that the Avengers are the "premiere league" so to speak and thus would only accept veteran, battle tested heroes to their membership. You could of course create a new "veteran" character, but it's not as believable because wouldn't we have all heard of him? The closest to that is the Sentry, who was pretty new. True he wasn't created specifically for the Avengers but he hadn't been around long before he was put on the team. Echo was also "almost new". I don't have a problem with it. I always thought it was a little weird that characters like Firestar and Justice got put on the Avengers and even they weren't brand new characters. The X-Men it makes more sense, because they will take in any mutant, regardless of experience level.

On the flipside, how many characters pre-Bendis were created to join the Avengers? None really come to mind.

These characters debuted in Avengers, and it really isn't anywhere near what I thought it would be. Though my knowledge isn't strong enough to confirm whetehr the writers created them specifically to join the Avenegrs. Some, like Wonder Man or Ant Man Debuted as Villains or allies that joined later: Captain Britain/Lionheart, Ant Man, Silverclaw, Triathlon, Yellowjacket, Living Lightning, Deathcry, Mantis, Swordsman, Black Knight, Vision.

Black Knight was a recurring character who had debuted in Avengers, then had a solo UK title adventure, and then joined the Avengers. I think...would that still count as a created specifically created to join the team?
Looking at that, there's a number of 'legacy' characters there, Cap, Ant Man, Yellow Jacket and Black Knight were all successors to the code-name...interesting.

I have no problem with the fact that there are just old characters. I liked when new avengers started, because there were old but not "avengers" characters and then other came, like Dr. Strange, or Iron Fist which also wasn´t old avengers. If they put new characters, it will mean that some of old will go into limbo. There is many unused characters to pick, so no need to create new characters for every roster change. I like more return of old characters (x-men, or avengers) then create new and sending them to limbo.

I think it boils down to the whole "there are so many characters out there that are not used, why create more" mentality.. I mean look how most fans react on here to the new characters showing up in x-books instead of older characters like the x-kids being used.

Fun Fact: Using the widest possible definition of membership, approximately 81 characters joined the Avengers between 1963 and Disassembled in 2005, or about two new members a year. Since New Avengers and the "Bendisverse" began in 2005, 44 new members have joined the Avengers, or about SEVEN new members a year.
Of those new members, fifteen were introduced since 2005, but correcting for Dark and Young Avengers members, only four characters who joined the "main" Avengers since 2005 were introduced after 2005: Amadeus Cho, Eric O'Grady, Prince of Orphans, and Quake. Fudging the dates a bit would add Jessica Jones, Protector, Sentry and Echo, all of whom were introduced within five years of the New Avengers debut.

Holy crap. And even Prince of Orphans is a retake on an old character.

My only problem is that the New Avengers aren't that "new" anymore. I want a new name. I like the idea of the two books, sort of.
My take on how it should be:
Avengers - Classic Avengers like Captain America, Thor and Iron Man. Plus newish heroes like Rulk, Protector, Quake and Storm (in the sense she's never been an Avenger). The more active team with a set roster. I don't think they should introduce many new characters but draw from new characters that are created and lesser known characters that have faded into the background. Avengers is meant to be the team where people like Hawkeye can go from a criminal to one of the greatest heroes of earth.
New Avengers - A sort of social club for Avengers and other veteran heroes like Iron Fist, Thing, Dr Strange. A more reactive team with a floating roster of whoevers crashing at the mansion or playing poker that afternoon.
Avengers to me should be epic, New Avengers the soap opera.

I am all for there not being any new hero's join Avengers. They are ment to be the best, able to handle the situations on one else can... so that means a character needs to prove themselves first. I think like in the 80's there were some very mediocer heros on the Avengers lineup - Mantis, Tigera, Triathelon, stingray, swardsman. I mean any rag-tag team of villans should be able to deal with them.
What would be good to see is new Villans - high class villans that really do have a plan or what ever that only the Avengers can overcome.
New Avengers are like that Veteran team, they may not be the most powerful or greatest minds, but they have the key experience to know what to do. That is why DD fits in well. Marvel Knights.
Avengers seem to be the best of the best, smartest and strongest etc...

Why was Mantis on Earth? Sharra Neramani(Deathcry) was sent to Earth to be a sort of foreign liason. She was ostensibly there to keep an eye on the humans and to facilitate contact between the forces of Earth and Chandilar. So it makes sense in a way to have her hang out with the Avengers. what was Mantis's reason?

Mantis was on Earth because she is a human being, not an alien.
She started hanging out with the Avengers because she was sleeping with the Swordsman when he was invited to join.

Oh, I see. I only remember her as being one of the Guardians of the Galaxy and often being green with antenna.... Why does she have antenna?

It's supposed to be a hairstyle. In recent years, though, artists have started drawing it like she has actual antenna for some reason.
