The new costume looks better on the other pages than it does on the cover.  But that haircut....  Eeesh.  I just need to know whats going on there.  Reminds me of some bad 80's workout video.

For a couple of seconds, I thought this was whatshername showing up...the one that had taken up the Captain Britain mantle.

It's mind boggling to me that there are people saying that her old uniform was much more "military" than this one....how is bare legs and your ass hanging out military like? What military? The Spartans?

And even more laughable is the people crying out "Why take away her name and just make her some lame legacy character!"...do people not know what her origin is? She's the female version of a legacy. Slapping a female moniker over the name of the male hero. Batgirl. Spider-Girl. Etc. Giving her Captain Marvel is much more progressive than Ms. Marvel. Hell she had more of a claim to be Captain Marvel before Monica Rambeau and Genesis lol.

Going forward, what types of stories and genres are you interested in tackling in "Captain Marvel?"

I have a vision for "Captain Marvel." I want this to be a book about optimism, about exceeding even our own expectations, about the power of possibility and the seeming magic of flight.

That said, my own optimism, my personal expectations are kept somewhat in check -- the market being what it is, an "ongoing" title seems to mean, what? 6-12 issues these days, isn't it? And that's if you're lucky. I want so badly to be proven wrong. We are trying very, very hard to overcome the learning curve and hit the ground running strong but I'm not planning year two at this point. If we get to 12 issues I will consider this a wild success.

C'mon now, people: prove me wrong. Show me that a female-led book about the power of the human spirit, about the many guises of heroism, a book wherein no one gets raped or puts her cervix on display, can break six issues, won't you?

Nice to see when writers admit things are tough for an ongoing and saying hwo they are just going to do their all. And she's right, people bitch there are no female books but when the books don't focus on "female" things a lot ditch them. This will be Marvel's only female solo book, I want to read about this Captain Marvel for years.

You are right about that. Genis was never in the military (at least not until the end of his series) and neither was Monica. Carol was in the military and like you stated her origin is so closely tied to the original Captain.

I love the type of story that DeConnick wants to tell. It sounds so uplifting and ambitious. I'm excited.

I don't mind the short hair, but it needs to be styled just a tad differently to avoid Sharon Stone. I don't particularly care for the costume but I hope it evolves as the series goes along. I agree with whoever said this costume would look better with the lightning bolt as opposed to the Marvel emblem.

It would be cool if Monica became Marvel Woman now. Mostly because it's a code name that to my knowledge hasn't been used in Marvel. Photon, while more original, just doesn't have much bang.

I'll also admit that I'm not a big fan of the new costume (or the shorter hair. I like my ladies with long hair!), but I'm absolutely going to be giving this book a shot. Brian Reed's book never caught my attention, but DeConnick's vision sounds really grand. I like that she's shooting for something more than just "entertaining" comics. I too want to see this book make it past 6 issues!

I'm also not very fond of the new costume. I get the "de-sexing" of the costume, but I think the lightning design on the chest should have remained, as that was a unique feature for Carol. They could have put Mar-Vell's star logo on the back of the costume, or possibly on the back of some short, open jacket to wear on top of it.

IMO, the neck area of the new costume is too much "military" look, and I think the costume has too many dominant red elements, but the new costume can be turned into something classy and elegant with only a liitle tweaking. Check below, to see my slightly altered version of it.....

The new look reminds me of something a character might have worn in Dark Knight returns. It just doesn't look like a superhero costume. Still it's about time Ms Marvel became Captain Marvel.

I think the more military look comes from the fact that she is Captain Marvel and not Ms. Marvel or Warbird. The title denotes a military rank so perhaps Carol is going more in that direction.

I agree with that assessment, it would also be a natural progression.... Carol's successful efforts to become the best hero she can be earning her now a new rank and position. Still Mar-Vell himself never looked this "militaristic", nor did any member of the Nova Corps, which was also a hierarchic organisation.

I don't like the short hair either but in the internal pages she doesn't have it. Her hair is clearly much longer. Unless she cuts her hair in the middle or end of the issue?

And I've seen people say that if we want more female lead books we all need to support this. Well, what if it sucks? We shouldn't support a book just for demographic reasons. It's too bad that it apparently has to be that way, with the assumption that if we don't like this particular book then females must not sell.

Well Captain Marvel's costume was based on Kree military look (which is militaristic in the sense of it being so "bland" and uniform like). I think Carol is borrowing more from U.S. (maybe alil bit of British military too, I'm no expert on military garb) military styling than off-world or even other countries.

But I agree there are aspects that could chage on it. My primarily issue is with the Capt. Marvel insignia versus the lightning bolt. I like the use of red, always a favorite color of mine.

Well of course their is the option that it doesn't suck LOL...DeConnick has a pretty good track record imo so far. So I hold out that she'll be a great writer. I at least like the vision she has for the book.

Assaid above, I too think they should have kept the lightning bolt. I can even see a full-suit design with everything on top of the lightning (upper chest and right arm) in red color, and everything below (left arm, torso, legs) in dark blue.

I'm beginning to favor the jacket-on-top idea more and more, as it could have had the military styled collar and the star enblem on the back. Another spot for the star insigna might have been as a clip for the sash, but that might have looked too similar to Phoenix' sash. Then again, the short-haired blonde in blue jumpsuit with yellow star chest logo looks very similar to 80ies' Dazzler.... so potential mix ups with X-folks was something they didn't seem to mind.

My main problem with the red color is, that the red&blue color scheme too is based on Mar-Vell's look. IIRC, Mar-Vell only adopted that costume when he seperated himself from the Kree, whereas his original look was white& green. Maybe she should have taken something from that?

Well of course if a book sucks we shouldn't support it just cause lol. Look at Ghost Rider. People were not happy at all with it, and now it's canceled and hopefully Marvel takes the right note from this and realizes they need to get back to the core of the character and it can do better. Like with Punisher and Daredevil right now.

With the hair it seems from interviews that it is long like someone mentioned you see in the preview pages, but it slicks back on the sides when in costume for the helmet and such, so the pony tail in the back we just can't see there probably.

I'm guessing the green and white wasn't picked for that very reason, as Carol is a hero of Earth so would be more likely to adopt the colors that Mar-Vell used when he separated from the Kree and was more associated with Earth.

Another thought is that thos costume would be easier to transition to film versus her previous one lol

Reading about the author's intentions...I'm not sure he's aware that he's writing a woman who's been doing the superheroing thing for a loooong time.  I mean yeah, he pays lip service to Mystique in the old Ms. Marvel stuff... but come on.  This isn't little Carol Danvers feeling bad about locking up Arachne.  This is a woman who's been everywhere and done everything.  This is a woman who's been BINARY, which I can't remember exactly but would at least seem to be on par with the powers of Captain Marvel, if not more powerful.  She's slung around fireballs like it's nothing.  She's been to distant stars and back.

Being positive and the wonders of flight and exceeding your own expectations?  Yeah, I could totally see that.

If you were writing Cloud Nine.

Ummm...the author is a woman, Kelly Sue DeConnick. At least if you going to critically analyze the interview, get your pronouns correct

Alright, my mistake.  It was a she.

I take it that you have no response to my thoughts on the context of the interview itself, so I'll take my leave.

Hey we don't have many female writers, just want to make sure she gets her credit where its due, whether its good or bad credit lol...

But since you insist, I think DeConnick wants to tell a more up-beat, inspirational style story for the character. While its kinda hard to fully visualize how that will translate into the actual stories, I look forward to it. She seems to want to write a very optimistic book that might take some elements of whimsy. So I have no problem with it.

There was that better

Partially.  I'm not bashing optimism, it just feels like the particular brand of optimism she wants to tell may be better suited to a different character with a different history.

I'm cautiously hopeful for this series.  The uniform is okay.... though I'll miss her classic costume.  The new look is a bit busy to me and I like many of Joerg's simplification of the design.  I'm more concerned about the interior artwork, which looks muddied somehow and that God-awful helmet.  UGH!

My chief concern is that the launch of this book mirrors the last MS. MARVEL series in a few ways...
1) The writer is a relative unknown who got her break into Marvel through her connections to a big name creator.
2) The artist is also getting their big break on this title and has a "dark and moody" style.  3) Neither has a strong reputation or fan following to draw in new readers.
4) The series spins out of a major event and sees Carol taking on a new role and purpose *again*.

Everyone seems keenly aware that a female lead is a hard sell, but instead of loading the deck in her favor with a creative team that has some credibility with fans they give the title to untested creators who readers are less likely to take a risk on in this market.

As a HUGE Carol Danvers fan, I really want this series to succeed.  If I'm taking a "wait-and-see" attitude, I can only imagine what readers who are unfamiliar with Carol will think of it.
Join the effort to convince Marvel to give the Uncanny X-Students their own monthly series...

I like Carol's nrew haircut.
Having that many buttons on her gloves looks off. Why would you wear gloves that button up like that? It doesn't correspond to buttons on the sleeves of military dress uniforms. She probably just materializes the suit out of ambient molecues, but isn't generating glove buttons still meaningless effort?

So they should have forced on a big name writer (Aaron maybe? Slott) and artist (Bachalo? Land?) and then later transition in a less well known writer who genuinely wants to do the book?

Funny you bring up her last series which lasted 75 issues in this market for a book that isn't a top-tier character isn't a bad move.
