Topic: C2E2 Panels: New Gambit Series And More Posted: 15-Apr-2012 at 4:40am |
Avengers vs X-Men Panel
DC's New 52 Panel
Marvel Cup O' Joe Panel
Amazing Spider-Man Panel
Ultimate Comics Panel
New Ultimate Universe Event
Scarlet Spider
Hawkeye PanelNext Big Thing
Gambit is getting an ongoing written by James Asmus and drawn by Clay Mann
Hawkeye is by Matt Fraction and David Aja...
I'm moreso anticipating the Hawkeye than Gambit. Only because I'm not fully sold on Gambit getting a solo. Plus I get to see Kate in Hawkeye's book and that's always great.

Fraction and Aja on Hawkeye with Kate Bishop Hawkeye along for the ride too? Sold.
Asmus and Mann on Gambit...sold as well.
Interesting "Divided We Fall". Sounds like the Ultimate Universe is picking up steam. Funny that it seems that Spencer might be off Ult X for the slowness of his stuff when they approved it all lol.
Pham on Scarlet Spider is cool, still loving that book. Stegman on Fantastic Four is interesting. Wonder if it will be for after Hickman too. Funny that they made no mention of that being Hickman's last arc when they've already announced he leaves in October/November.
Mighty Thor and Journey Into Mystery crossover for 50th anniversary...nice. Need to catch up on both those books.

Sooo excited about Gambit. Literally everything I wanted his solo series to be about. Getting him away from the X-Men will do wonders for his character. I really wish Mann wasn't on it... His art puts me to sleep and he's the last artist I think of when I think "sexy and fun." Blah. I like Asmus though.

And I want to preference that I am a Gambit fan. Just of all the X-characters who could have a solo I was hoping for someone else. Then again, of all of the X-characters Gambit is one of the few that can sustain a successful one.
Aja and Fraction are a perfect team. I won't say who I blame for the fall of the Iron Fist title...just know he wrote a series about a certain member of the Summers clan that was terrible too.

I like the news about Gambit, I like the news about Hawkeye, am I much less happy about Pham on Scarlet Spider. I haven't liked ANYTHING that he's been put on and I kinda feel like Marvel is trolling me at this point. >.<

Lol BC, whoever could you be referring to I wonder...
Yeah it's be cool to see some others get solos perhaps out of the X-Men, but there seems to be so few of them that can do solo titles. Even some big names like Cyclops and Storm don't seem to do very well solo wise. Could be bad creative team, or they just work better as part of a team.
Finally get to have some non moping/stuck on Rogue Gambit on a regular basis, though we got that in X-23 and so far in Astonishing. Liu would have been awesome on the title, but glad to see Asmus going somewhere as he was the only thing I liked about Gen Hope lol.

That hawk eye book seems like it could be really cool. I welcome more solo books with the traditional young sidekick angle.
Not too interested in gambit as a character or as a solo book, but not against checking it out. Can't really think of many other xmen who could work as a solo star. So many of them function best in a team setting. Iceman is one character who I think is just enough of a blank slate to take some interesting places in a solo ongoing. He hasn't really had a defined role since the original team, and I think playing up that angle could lead to some interesting directions.

Traditional as in DC-traditional LOL...
And now that you mention it...Iceman could probably work. I'm just not sure if he is popular enough to get people to even check the book out. Say what you will about Gambit but probably behind Wolverine and Storm (maybe Rogue),he's one of the most popular X-Man and he's barely been in the film series and wasn't even a team member of the last two cartoons.

Not gonna lie, was thinking about how much I enjoyed the Damian and Bruce/Dick dynamic over the past few years. Seeing that with a few Marvel characters could be cool where it makes sense. And I think Kate Bishop training under Hawkeye makes sense given the initial meetings of those two. Cap and a new kid bucky (not the girl) could be fun as well.
But anyway, back to Gambit...
I would say that Gambit is definitely the most popular X-Man behind Wolverine and Storm. Hate to admit it but Cable is up there too. It is probably a good decision to try another solo with him. Rogue lucked out and got a stealth solo behind the "X-men" banner, but you can't do that for everyone, and sadly I don't think Iceman is popular enough to get past 12 issues either unless the book has incredible word of mouth.
The great thing about Gambit is that he is one of the few mutants where his powers are the least interesting thing about him. The premise of a cajun thief, charming ladies, skirting the lines between the criminal underworld and the law, with origins from a creepy bayou setting is a pretty interesting pitch for a character. All of the years of pining over Rogue, and sitting on the sidelines as an X-Man is what soured him for me. But if this book gets back to the basics of gambit (which seems to be indicated) it could be pretty refreshing.

The sidekick thing is really cool to re-visit, as there has been a lack of side-kicks for sometime all around. And like Lorr the Damien with Dick/Bruce thing has been pretty cool at DC lately. Batman, the only character that has pretty steadily had a sidekick for a long time lol.
Moving some of the youths back to sidekick status would be awesome as it would get them use outside of just waiting for minis or event tie-in's to bring them out. Young Avengers especially. Patriot as the new Cap side-kick under Brubraker, that would be awesome.
Agreed on the Gambit popularity. There is a reason his solos have kept coming up. I would dig an Iceman solo. Be about time for the iced one to get his moments in the sun. Hell even the team leader, who everyone knows pretty much can't even get more than a mini years and years ago.

I wanna see X-23 teamed with Captain America. It's so weird a pairing that it might just work. It would be amusing to see Cap react a bit uncomfortably to Laura, yet come to respect her.
Granted, I'd buy pretty much anything X-23 appeared in.
You know what else would be great? Dr. Nemesis appearing in Fantastic Four. Or Fantomex teaming up with Daredevil.

Pairing X-23 with Cap would be really random...and I'm not sure Cap would want to work with her. Plus it would probably upset his currently good relationship with Logan.
Cap usually likes to pair himself with adults now, Falcon and Sharon.
DD and Fantomex would be interesting...only if Waid is writing it.

Pairing Cap with X-23 could build off of Black Widow's involvement with Laura, as well as going off of their initial meeting that had Cap wanting X-23 turned over to SHIELD custody for imprisonment rather than sent to be rehabilitated with the X-Men.
Not that random.

But she's taking the place of Nomad...she's his first new young sidekick.. :-(
Now if you put Laura with Black Widow...now you talking...
