Ok, so since there are both White and Red Sox fans here, and both teams made a move yesterday. What do you guys think of them?

White Sox get Mark Teahen, give up Josh Fields and Chris Getz

Red Sox get Jeremy Hermida, and give up a couple of minor league lefties.

Having not seen the White Sox much this year, I like this deal. They get a good versitile left handed hitter. He can play first, third and the outfield corners. He may take over at third, or he might take over right and let them buy out Dye.

Hermida is one of those underrated guys that I've always liked. He's coming off a mediocre (at best) season, but gives Boston insurance in case Bay leaves. Only problem is he's a left handed hitter, and that's not really what they need as a fourh outfielder, with Ellsbury and Drew also lefthanded.

Thoughts?

Teahen isn't that good of a player. I think Fields and Getz still have minable value. As it stands, Teahen is a bad defensive third baseman which is were he will be playing. He can't hit for average, he can't hit for power, he isn't a run producer, and he doesn't get on very often. I really hope we got some serious cash considerations for bringing him on. The fact that we re-signed Kotsay makes Teahen even less useful, because there isn't a reason for him to flash his subpar leather at 1st or OF. We could have lived with an IF of Konerko, Getz/Nix, Ramirez, and Beckham. I'm more interested in seeing what happens with RF, DH, and the Bullpen. Dye is pretty much squeezed out since his option has been declined, and I think he's starting to sour on the organization. He's taken some serious pay hits to stay with the team over the years, so I don't know if he'll take another hit at this point to come back as a DH. He's getting older and likely wants one last big contract to eat off of until his string runs out. I'm really happy that it looks like Podsednik isn't coming back. Every time I have to sit someone down and explain to them why you don't want a guy like that on your team, my hair gets grayer.

Here's hoping Beckham wins the AL Rookie of the Year.

You got to be kidding me! Being a left handed hitter shouldn't dictate how effective he's going to be. Francona just reads "Idiot's guide to Coaching", with his picture on the cover. It reminds me of the Simpson's episode where Mr. Burns benches Darryl Strawberry for Homer because he is a righty. If a guy can hit he can hit. This is the majors not the minors. I think Francona is set in that mind set. Notice how the Phillies have done since he has left? Sure he has won two world series, but he has had a team that most Red Sox coaches haven't. Unless you get a Dick Williams who can whip a team into a championship team. But those guys don't last like how Dick got chased out of Boston because he didn't get along with The Bub's boy Yaz. Francona was only hired to lure Schilling to Boston.

Hermida also was never under rated. He merely just never panned out. Not to bad since they got him for other players who never panned out. Bet you that Alvarez will win a Cy Young next year.

Hitters aren't always hitters. Some are good at one thing, some at many, and there's always too many per farm system that aren't good at any. Big, free-swinging left handed mashers tend not to be able to hit left handed pitching. In the golden summer of their youth, their sub .270 BA and .317/.221 righty/lefty splits are negated by a .400 OBP and a .500 SLG, but when they get old, they get real limited as to what they can do. For an older model of this player, see Jim Thome. For a younger model, see Ryan Howard. Speaking of those two, how is that for a roster problem? "Man, we have to move this 47 HR a year hitter to make room for this 57 HR a year hitter..."

Now there's a game I know close to nothing about. I know what a home run is, though. Pitchers throw the ball, batters try to hit it and catchers are the guys behind who, well, catch the ball, right? And bases are the little white square thingies on the floor.

Oh, and I know a baseball bat is great for thrashing a car. And a TV. Although I haven't thrashed a TV yet...

@ the Bub:
I'm with you on Ryan Howard. Apparently all you have to do with him is throw sliders on the outside of the plate and there's nothing he can do. Just don't hang one though, cause he might hit it a mile.

I Think Teahen is just a stop gap for next year, until the young third baseman Chicago has is ready. (Forgot his name)

@ sleezoid:
I've never really been a Tito basher, but there are several times over every season where you just scratch your head and ask what the hell is he thinking?

What do you think Boston should do at short? I think that they will pick up Alex Gonzalez' option, however I don't think he'll be anywhere near a .300 hitter over the course of a full season. He will though save a bunch of runs with his glove.

Red Sox still need a righty hitting outfielder to give Drew and Ells a day off Rocco Baldelli is not the answer, plus he's a free agent.

If you listen to sports radio in Boston or read the Herald, you tend to hear much anti Belichek talk and never any on Francona. Just putting that out there. I don't see any good fix for the Sox for next year. I think they should really try to get Nomar back until they can clear this all up. He can play first and maybe outfield as well as a hitting specialist. Just use him when Baldeli is hurt and vice versa. I have more input on this but I am in a rush.

I have a slight thing for Thome. But he really is the best example of an aging power lefty slugger, though. My guy is Frank Thomas. I try not to talk about him too much because I'll never shut up about how he's a better hitter than any AL player in the 90's, including Belle, Manny, Thome, Griffey, A-Rod, Ripken, and anyone else I might have missed. He's also been anti-steroid since day one and has been all for instating mandatory randomized drug tests since the early 90's, and has been very anti player's union for most of his career. I think him, Griffey, and Thome might be the only non-steroidal players from that era. Of the three, I think Thome is the most suspect due to the amount of weight he gained after his first couple cups of coffee, but when they showed his family members in the crowd after he hit his 500th, his dad is about as big as he is. If Frank ends up a juicer I'll burn all my Sox stuff and never watch a ball game again.

UPDATE: Red Sox pick up option on Victor Martinez, decline option on Varitek. I'm wondering if we can pick up Varitek on the cheap to serve as a back up. I'd like to get a back up that can actually hit once in a while, but that hasn't happened on the South Side since the first half of '05.

@ the Bub: so what is up with Jermaine Dye that you guys didn't offer him arbitration? You guys lose picks if he signs elsewhere and I saw that Boston is one of the teams interested. (at this point in the season, Boston is linked to any possible free agent signing rumors).

Now that Alex Gonzalez is going to Toronto, what do you guys think about Pedroia playing short. Apparently it has come up in case they can't get Marco Scutaro.
Personally, I like the idea. They woundn't have to give up the pick to get him, and it seems that there are more quality second basemen on the market than shortstops (Orlando Hudson, Placido Polanco, Mark DeRosa, and I think I'm forgetting someone.

Also hoping that I read about Boston going after Harden is right. I know it's basically a coin flip as to him being healthy or not, but if he is he can dominate teams.

@ The Bub: I haven't heard much about the White Sox lately, but that makes me think that Kenny Williams has something up his sleeve. Thoughts?

I think Pedroia going to short is a "if all else fails" move. I want to see Ramirez there as he should always have been, but to do so would mean "bye bye" Bucholz.

I guess Scutaro signed with Boston, so there goes the talk of Hanley or moving Pedroia. Too bad I have always liked Orlando Husdon.

@ Sleezoid: Who would you rather have Bay or Holliday? I have liked what Holliday has done in the past, but he really stuggled in the A.L. earlier this year. For whatever reason, he seems more like a N.L. player. Bay has already proven that he can handle the pressure cooker in Boston.

@ The Bub: I had forgot that the Chisox had pretty much rebuilt theirt bench with Vizquel and Andruw. Also, what's going on with Jenks? Form the outside looking in, he seems like a pretty good pitcher. Why are they trying to (apparently) run him out of town?

We had a couple Type A free agents that we couldn't offer arbitration because they would have accepted it. Dye is probably the worst defensive right fielder in the AL and his bat looks like its in serious decline. Look at this 2nd half numbers. We declined on Dotel because while he's good, he's not worth the money he would be paid, and he digs the long ball more than any chick I've ever met.

We did indeed construct a bench made of Kotsay, Vizquel, and Jones. A little old, but if parts don't break down they only sub and spot start. I'm hoping we can sign Henry Blanco to a one year deal. We got Mark Teahen, too. I'm really not exicted to see that scrub manning the hot corner on a daily basis. I was sort of hoping we would work out a deal to get Adrian Beltre to play 3rd. I do NOT want Podsednik back. He had a very good batting average but he didn't walk, had no power, and unless Tim Raines is the 1st base coach he has absolutely no base running acumen. Getting picked off of 3rd with 2 outs isn't more helpful than striking out with 2 outs, but it is more frustrating and disgusting. I don't like this "DH by committee" plan we seem to have right now. I know the brass wants youth and flexibility, but when you play in a launching pad with what could be the most elite starting rotation in the game, you should be able to dedicate a bat in the lineup to an OPS god that doesn't own a glove. I'd be less irritated if that Adrian Gonzalez to the White Sox deal happened, but I won't hold my breath for that. We need another OFer too.

Jenks is a great pitcher when he is not hurt/fat. The reason we picked him up off waivers in 2005 was he had serious behavioral and conditioning issues. If we were gonna deal him, I don't think Kenny says what he says about the conditioning. He was a truly elite closer in 2006-8 despite the decline in Ks and velocity, but he sucked it up down the stretch last year, forcing Ozzie to rely on secret weapon Matt Thornton more often than he should have.

I wonder what happens to Halladay.

I think with Lackey in Boston now, we might actually be close to getting Adrian Gonzalez. I really do like Bucholz though. I am wondering what prospect though we have to give up?

If Adrian Gonzalez is the prize you will be giving up very talented prospects. As in more than one.

We signed Teahen to a 3 year deal. This makes no sense to me as we have a supposedly stellar 3B prospect named Brent Morel that lit up the AFL this offseason, and there is also the matter of Teahen not being particulalry good at anything.

JJ Putz is now ours. Not a bad deal, but nothing to be exicted over at this point. because of this and the maddening contract Scott Linebrink has us over one for, we did not re-sign DJ Carrasco. I don't like this.

We gave up 2 middling prospects destined to never succeed in the AL for...Juan Pierre. The guy has never played in the AL and its been several years since he had a an extra base hit. I wish we would have gone after Matsui harder. Ozzie wants to do this DH by committe thing but with Konerko's age and the departure of Dye and Thome, this team needs some serious power. Quentin is a beast when healthy (key word there is "when") and Rios has been on the decline for 3 years. You don't field a bunch of .700 OPS scrubs at a bandbox. Here's hoping Gordon Beckham can squeeze out 100 extra base hits to offset the problem. Hell, he's done everything else they've asked of him. Great hair, too.

Like the Lackey deal, but I also figure that Clay is now probably a goner for a bat at first or third, probably Adrian. To get Adrian, Boston is going to have to give up a ####load of talent, starting with Buchholtz, Casey Kelly, or Jacoby, with others, which makes me nervous.

Never have been a big Mike Cameron guy, but he is a good player. Don't really like giving him two years since he's 37. Sucks that Bay is gone now though.

What do you guys think about the Halladay/Lee deal. It's pretty funny cause I was reading something by Ken Rosenthal the other day and he suggested pretty much the exact deal that happened. (This was before anyone had even thought of it as far as I know)

Putz is a good pitcher when he's on, but he hasn't been heathy the last couple of years and the results have shown it. Beckham is a pretty good player and from what I've seen (granted, not much), looks like a similar player to Pedroia (except he still has hair on top of his head)

Heard it might be Westmoreland, Kelly, and Bucholtz. Theo is very adamant about not trading Kelly however. I think Jacoby might be leaving. He is a Boras agent, so they might as well get something for him now before his contract is up and the Yankees sign him for 20 mil a season.

Supposedly he is going to get like 15 mil for five years from the Mets. Which means he is going to hurt himself in May 10 and be ready to play again in August 15, like every player they over pay for. I would like to see him in the Red Sox lineup however if they the Gonazalez. Can you imagine that lineup. Pedroia, Youk, Papi, Gonazalez, Bay, Martinez, Drew, Scutoro, Cameron. Not much speed but a hell of a bat.

As much as it pains me, there is no way Bay is coming back. I Think Bay ends up in Seattle.

Trading Buchholtz still scares me, even if is for Adrian. I think this guy could be a dominant pitcher very soon, and (in my opinion), finding (or getting) a true ace is much tougher than getting a superstar position player.

Don't know toom much about Westmoreland or Kelly, but I guess that Kelly decided to be a full time Pitcher from now on.
