Topic: The Amazing Spider-Man: News, Trailers, Reactions Posted: 11-Jan-2010 at 11:59pm |
Well looks like Spider-Man 4 is canceled and the franchise is over! Yup the Raimi, Maguire, Dunst Spidey days are over.
BUT looks like Spidey is getting a reboot and they'll be taking him to high school. I have just one request, PLEASE let Bendis write it. He writes an AMAZING teen Peter. He knows how to make a movie that isn't just a Spider-Man movie but a Peter Parker movie. I'd see a Bendis written Spidey movie no matter who they cast, who the bad guy or if it's like made for five dollars. The script will still be beyond excellent.
AND I think this bodes well for an eventual X-Men reboot. If Spidey, which made tons more then X-Men, is able to get rebotted, once Fox's contract with Marvel stops and they get control over it, I think a reboot is almost a sure. So the X-Men movies might be saved!

That sucks. I loved Raimi's take on Spider-Man, and Tobey Maguire was a perfect choice for Peter Parker.

A high school reboot would be good yeah. I mean, if they rebooted the series, but had him in college again, what would be the point? It would just be the same as the old movies.
Your Bendis idea is good XtrememOne. Do they ever get comic book writers to pen the scripts for comic book movies?

Yes; J. Michael Straczynksi wrote a feature-length screenplay about the life of the X-Men character Changeling that was adapted into a movie last year. Unfortunately for X-Fans, Kevin Sidney used his powers to disguise himself as Angelina Jolie the entire time.

I'm pissed. Their logic is going around in circles. They ditched Raimi because he said he couldn't be done by the 2011 date. Then they push it back to 2012 so they can find someone else. Push it back to 2012 and keep Raimi. Easy.

Even as someone who didn't enjoy the Raimi/Maguire films, this is WAY too early for a reboot.

From the sounds of it I thought Raimi walked away, rather than being sacked.

Going back, it seems like no one quite knows for sure how it went down. Hmmmm...
Either way, they're going to fall into the Superman trap.

They should get Michael Chabon to write the new Spider-Man movie. He did script work on Spider-Man 2 and is an amazing writer.

I don't feel sorry for Raimi at all. He's the one who screwed up Spider-Man 3 because of his selfish desire to do a mediocre villain like Sand Man. And then he wanted to do Vulture another mediocre villain. I just can't get passed that. And then he completly screwed Venom fans by casting Topher Grace as Eddie Brock/Venom and not only that, but killing Venom off after only 10 minutes of screentime. AND....Having Venom team up with Sand Man and killing Harry and kidnapping Mary Jane which are both things the original Venom would never do. These things really make me mad.

I have The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay on my shelf to read. I've heard nothing but praise for the man. He should totally come to the new franchise for some scripting if he was the Spider-Man 2 helper dude.

He's awesome! I just finished his first novel, Mysteries of Pittsburgh and Kavalier & Clay is one of my ten favorite books of all time! Nice guy too. Met him at WonderCon last year where he did a panel with Fraction and a year before that at Home Depot Expo.

See, I really disliked Spider-Man 2 and 3. I felt Tobey Maguire wasn't the right choice for the role at all, and while he looked the part, and was a decent enough actor, I can't explain why I disliked him so much. Spidey 3 was just ridiculous with the emo Parker and his dance routine. Kirtsen Dunst always annoyed me as MJ. To me, MJ shouldn't have been so soft... if that makes sense? Not being a follower of Spidey other than the animated series as a kid, it just seemed kind of... I don't know... I didn't care about Peter, and I certainly didn't care about MJ. Harry I cared about, as a character, and Aunt May, but other than that, I thought they fell short.
It's far too early for a reboot. It's not like they were universally panned like Ang Lee's Hulk movie was... if they reboot now, it smacks too much of desperation. Ditto X-Men. Can you really see anyone else playing Wolverine other than Hugh Jackman until he's too old to feasibly play him? I think if Marvel are going to start rebooting things, they need to realise that the media of movies are completely different to that of comics-- while comic fans understand the need to reboot once in a while, the wider audience of movie goers might not, and therefore might feel alienated from the movies due to recasting or even restarting the entire franchise.

Last I heard about Spidey 4, Anne Hathaway was playing Felicia Hardy (yay!), except she'd be the Vulture's (yay to Malkovitch, boo to the character) daughter called the Vulturess (boo!). The only thing that could've fixed that would be Bruce Campbell wearing a fishbowl.
I hope they don't waste time retelling the origin. Raimi's Spider-Man handled that perfectly. It's not something that requires a square one reboot. Just plunk the new cast into a new situation and the audience will catch on.
"Spectacular Spider-Man" is the best Spidey I've seen, let alone the best Spidey in High School. It needs a third season. They should let Greg Wiseman and friends do the new flick.

Bruce Campbell would be awesome as Mysterio.
I'm saddened by this, but not surprised. Spider-Man 3 was a train-wreck. They merged 2 of the most important Spider-Man stories and added that awful Sandman thing and underdeveloped all 3. Still, 1 and 2 are unbelievable films and still IMO the best of the comic book adaptations, right up there with Dark Knight.

lol getting a bit of Sandman hate from a few posters. The things is the Sandman plotline was the best and most developed part of Spiderman 3.

Truthfully...if you want to see a really good rendition of Spidey on some type of film watch Spectacular Spider-Man. It is easily the best interpretation of a Marvel character on cartoon period...Its fun, it has action, it has story, and it has character development. Its sad that it was cancelled too :-(

Has it been officially ended? Last I heard it was awaiting confirmation on a third season.

There were good things about all 3 Spidey movies, but I have never been able to sit through any of them more than once. They were like Avatar, I went to see them because of the hype, and they held my attention, but in the end they didn't leave much of an impression with me. Perhaps a reboot could be good.

Bullcrap! There was nothing good about that. They completly screwed up Peter's origin just because they could'n't think of anything else to do with Sand Man. Sometimes I wished that Kingpin had been forced into the movie instead. Then Sand Man could work for him and not be so sympathetic.

Well looks like they already have a writer, at least for now(it has 2 and half years to get rewrites). The writer is Jamie Vanderbilt, and his resume doesn't look to impressive but who knows he could make a good one.
Still, no Bendis boo, lol. I don't know why I even had hoped he'd write it.
And it looks like both theories on why Raimi left is right. He was the one who choose to leave because he didn't think he could get a quality movie out by the release date BUT the studio would also no move up the release date. So really, it does seem to fall on the studio.

I kind of hope that if they do reboot they also buy the rights to Kingpin. I mean it's been nearly 7 years and there's not even a word yet of a Daredevil reboot/sequel. Also, I don't like the Highschool idea because there's not many actors that young that could pull it off. And I don't want a 20 year old playing someone who's 15. I also don't want them to base it completly off the Ultimate comics.

I don't really care for this news. I think the three Spider-Man films that were done were not only GREAT movies in their own right (yeah I liked 3, wanna fight about it?), but they've covered villains AND set up certain plot points. So what, now I get to see teenaged Spider-Man beat up the Green Goblin and Venom?
I know that the comic book industry thrives on re-boots and using the same villains and plots over and over and over again, but do we really need that in an already sucessful franchise?
I'm fine with a new writer/director/actors, but I don't see the need for a reboot.

I agree 100 percent. I can't be the only one who loved Emo Dancing Peter Parker. This news bothers me on many levels and makes me fear for the attention spans of modern movie-goers. Plus, like EMP said, everyone knows origin stories are boring, yet now we might have to rehash that whole thing again. I hate to be a Debbie Downer, but I hope this fails. Constantly rebooting franchises is not the way to go and doesn't solve anything.

Rebooting is such a terrible idea. Hulk, anyone? "This is how it SHOULD have been done!" "Really? Because it still blew, and you replaced Jennifer Connelly with Liv Tyler. I love both actresses, but Jennifer is so much classier and such a better actress, and has way cooler eyebrows.
Anyway, the only Spider-Man film I enjoyed was 2. The first one just felt boring and overworked, and the third one had way too many stories that collided in a weird way, I felt. I loved that Bryce Dallas Howard played Gwen Stacy. And Rosemary Harris IS Aunt May as far as I'm concerned. And I was secretly hoping the fourth one came through in the end just to fix everything and give the audience a proper close. Buuut, whatever. I don't mind that they cancelled it.
However, rebooting it is such a dumb idea.
