What's the scoop?  Are they the same thing, or different?  Do they coexist chronologically, or are they replacements and upgrades from one another?  If you know this off-hand, I nominate you for biggest X-dork on the board.  (This is a good thing).

There have been upgrades for the plane, I think, but the names are just referring to the same aircraft (or, at times, group of aircrafts).

Actually hasn't it gotten blown up several times?  We can't really call it the same plane if it was built from scratch after the old one was destroyed.

There are different models, and more than one of many of them.  The Blackbird itself is named so because it's an upscaled version of a real aircraft:  Lockheed SR-71 "Blackbird".  The ones that aren't modelled after this plane are not Blackbirds, but are something else.  One was called the Strato-Jet for instance.  Also, I'm fairly certain the one most recently used in Astonishing was called something else too.

What are they using now? I haven't really thought about it, or is it still Blackbird? (Which by the way is way cooler than the quinjet or pogo plane.)

I remember a story years ago in which one of the old Blackbirds had crashed into a swamp and sunk and one of the XMen brought it up to the surface years later. My memory is really hazy on the details though.
I would be interested to know how many times the XMens plane has been blown up.

Well, during Second Coming, we were shown the hangar and at least three different X-Jets of varying type.  Before they were destroyed, of course.  In Astonishing's 'Exogenetic', they had a space capable jet called the X2.  My guess is, with Madison Jeffries on staff, they just have numerous models of all different kinds of aircraft with constant upgrades and modifications as needed.

I'm pretty sure they've refered to the more recent model as the "X-Jet".

Well, I don't know about any recent blow-ups, but here are a few from back when the New X-Men first debuted:

#94 plane was disintegrated over Vahalla Mountain/Norad center by Count Nefaria and Ani-Men.  I believe both 'SR-71' and 'Blackbird' were used interchangeably there (#1 destroyed).   Also of note, if the po' ole mem'ry serves, another "inflatable" Blackbird jet hatched out of the destroyed one and, ironically and interestingly enough, is noted as "a Phoenix rising from the flames!"  This just mere issues from Jean becoming Phoenix.  Then, at the end of the issue, Nefaria dissolves the plane in some type of sonic beam or some such, which leaves the X-men up in the air, no Blackbird. (#2 destroyed)

#105 while Phoenix is fighting Firelord (and winning mind you), Eric the Red blasts the Blackbird and it explodes seconds later. (#3 destroyed)

In ish #104 when the X-Men borrowed a hovercraft, minutes later it was totally destoyed (by magnetic waves of force, although they were unaware Magneto was the culprit at that time).  Don't know if this really counts, but still...to be in 4 plane explosions in 12 issues is insane!!

And that's about all I know of Blackbird explosions...Sleepy

Excalibur took a blackbird after the Inferno incident. The X-Men were using Gateway at the time.

where do they keep getting them from?
The Thing: Didn't they come up with a cure for your kind?
Wolverine: You got a problem with mutants?
The Thing: I meant Canadians.

Beast built a few.

I think the original was bought from Lockheed Martin by Charles.

The more recent ones.... built by whoever with skills was around.  the most recent one was probably a collective effort from the mad science team.

Agreed, Marhawkman.

By now, they probably have a few anyways, so if 1 gets destroyed they still have someway to get around.  Just makes sense.

Marhawkman, do you think they have "updated" beyond the Blackbird series, or is the plane essentially still the same with just a few new additions?

I'm pretty sure the blackbird can go to space and back nowadays.

the latest one looks like it uses more alien tech than whatever they got from Lockheed-Martin.  It's shape is similar but that's about it.

Ah, I see.

Is it still black in color or more silvery these days like the old Avengers Quinjet?

Back in the early 80s, I remember mention of Nightcrawler and Logan fixing/repairing the Blackbird when(ever) it was damaged. During the 90s, I would think Forge handled his own fair share of repairs.

Forge built the navy blue Blackbird with red windows by combining a regular SR-71 with Shi'ar tech just before X-Men #1 happens. This design was popularized by the cartoon.
The original X-Men used to travel by Xavier's Learjet.

It would be amusing to calculate the cost alone of replacing all of the jets that have been destroyed.  One of my favorite all time lines is from the original Phoenix storyline when their random hovercraft looking plane gets destroyed and Nightcrawler yells, "Not again!"
If they switch from Blackbird planes there should be a noticeable dip in Lockheed's prophet margins. :)

I know of the OG Blackbird that got destroyed and rebuilt forever… The one Nightcrawler reclaimed for Excalibur in one issue… Then after the merger of the X-Men and the original X-Factor into the gold and blue squads I believe that Forge redesigned some new planes for the teams… And recently it appears that they have new transportation designed by the X-Club…

Well the thread title does refer to it as an "X-Wing".

WAAAY back in the day, the X-Men occasionally referred to their plane as an X-Wing. It may have only been once. But I know it happened because at the time I read it I was like, "hey, they stole that from Star Wars!"
