Topic: Fan Art: My Marvel One a Day Challenge Posted: 05-Jul-2010 at 7:19am |
I am going to try a new exercise. Basically, to force myself to draw everyday, I am going to try this challenge.
I am going to sketch and post a new Marvel character with a little bit of a new design either to their costume or their whole look, every day until I am actually making a living drawing comics, or until I completely run out of Marvel characters.
This is a link to my blog. That's where I'll be doing the posting.
http://rons-sketchbook.blogspot.com/
Since I will posting there everyday, this post is really just in case you guys want to request certain characters, provide feedback, or whatever. I won't actually post here everyday. As to requests, I can't promise I'll honor all of them, but I will try. Just keep in mind I want to go all over the Marvel map, not just the X-Men.
My first character is in the spirit of Independence Day. Bet you can guess who it is.
Ok thanks for indulging me!

I was guessing Jubilee, lawls.
You draw well. Nice lines, doesn't look like it took too much effort (a good thing, like it comes second nature). If you're really trying to get into drawing for Marvel, though, what I suggest is getting a very specific, personal, stylized technique. If you look at the big ticket artists who have recently exploded onto the scene, they're mostly very unique from other artists. I draw and paint a lot, but I think I'm a better painter than I am at drawing. I do have a specific style of painting, though. And the way I got to my style was by learning all the techniques made "typical" in the genre sense (impressionism, post impressionism, modern, neo modern, victorian, gothic, baroque, etc). I didn't become particularly good at any of them. I practiced painting after painting. Ink washes, water colors, acrylic, tempera, oil, etc. I learned back to fronts, vague to detail, lean to fat, all that stuff. And eventually, I warped it all into this specific style. I'm sure the style isn't new or anything, but I like to think it's pretty unique, and I just sold about $1500 worth of paintings. I probably sound cocky saying all this, and like I'm lecturing or trying to give unwelcome advice or something, lol. I'm probably just talking at this moment, but that's okay. Just giving my two cents worth.
I do like it, though. And cool idea, very cool idea. I wouldn't have the dedication, though.

First off congrats on selling your art! WooT!
Anyhow, this is exactly the kind of feedback I was hoping for. I am glad there are some other artists on the board to help critique. I get what you are saying about style. It's funny, I feel like I have a style, that it's a bit cartoony, perhaps too much so. In fact in school it felt like they were trying to beat it out of me lol. But I get what you are saying.
Anyhow, this is kind of why I am doing what I am doing. This is my motivation to draw and paint everyday again. Only through practice will I get any better, and/or develop a style.
Anyway thanks for commenting Polaris! I hope you will keep checking back, and maybe follow my blog. You should go check out my second drawing. It's a light-energy projecting female but it's not Jubilee. =P

Thanks for the encouragement guys! I am a little late on today's subject but it's an X-Men foe. Go check it out.
I would love to do some of those suggestions, I will see what I can do. Anole sounds particularly fun, what with his big ole monster arm.

I love that picture of Deathstrike. I'm just gonna throw this out there but how about my girl Arana, she's in my headshot if you don't know her.

I would also like to throw a man into the fold, a lot of the requests have been women. What about the Human Torch?

I love this initiative u have going here, and the drawings too. I wish I had the time/dedication to do something like Marvel One-a-day or maybe even just do a drawing/finish a painting one-a-day. Personally, I've been drawing for years but in the past few years I have started to really create mixed media work, not on comic-related art, but different work incorporating ink, paint, stenciling and drawings of course. But it's always great to come back and draw our favorite characters (for me it's mostly X-characters)
Anyway, my favorite so far has been Deathstrike, she just looks so evil, it's great. One suggestion I would have to is to make a little attention to little anatomical proportions like hand and leg shape/size when drawing in characters different/unusual positions, since I think that could really enhance the kind of realism style you have. Good luck and keep drawing!
And by the way: I would love to see that steam punk Juggernaut that you mentioned in your Captain America post haha

Thanks mistah. you have no idea how much I wish I could get the anatomy of limbs down. Hands, arms, legs, feet. Those are the banes of my existance. I do the core, the torso, the neck, the pelvis, the head really well I think, but for some reason, those darn appendages always give me trouble.

I think my favourite so far has to be Dagger. I like that you've taken elements from her costume and then added bits of your own which, while they're not HUGE changes, have made her look more bad-ass. I also like the fact that you made her look a little more muscular, which, since her background is as a dancer, kind of makes sense. Nice job on all of them though!

Thanks for the compliments das boot! By the way I did another request this time of the Human Torch. Sadly I have been travelling all day and did not get to start on it until 2 am. Also I don't have my computer or a scanner so the quality of the image is completely crappy because I had to take the picture with the camera in my phone. I will keep posting these this way for the next few days but when I get home on Sunday expect some re-scans and hopefully better quality images.
EDIT: Ok High Res versions up, plus a new one fem-Loki.

Very much enjoy seeing your drawings, Anna! The most recent (girl-type Loki) is very fun and nicely drawn.
In terms of feedback, the only real critique I can give you is to push your foreshortening more to get a more dynamic picture. The picture of girl-type Loki is (in my opinion) more dynamic than some of the other drawings even though the pose is static. I don't necessarily mean to JackKirbycize all of your drawings but don't be afraid to push out a hip or an arm to give the illusion of 3-Dimensionality.
Great job so far! I look forward to seeing more.
Edit: I forgot to also mention, looking at your drawings is very inspiring for me to draw more.

Not sure about the tattoos on Husk but I liked the concept of making her tougher, and her body has nice shape and her hair looks great. Hahah. I'm loving the Human Torch redesign and the female Loki.
Keep up the great work!

Heh, well sorry about the tats but hey at least they come off!
Thanks for the critique Swift! Foreshortening is certainly one of those skills I need to practice. It never looks natural to me when I try to use it. I will try to push it more during these sketches though.
EDIT:
Did a couple more requests including Arana and Unuscione. I will need more requests soon, or I'll have run out. I'm saving Rogue for later for when I am more kick-ass.

It's all looking great as you go on! Some more ideas you could draw:
Iceman
Shadowcat
Falcon (and Redwing)
Quicksilver
Amelia Voght

Thanks guys! I really liked the way Namora came out too. My work quality goes up and down depending on how much time I have to dedicate to each picture obviously and I spent quite a bit more time on that one. I liked Loki also, but I was bothered that I didn't seem to draw her feet very well.
I will look at doing some more on list GuthrieP. Please keep suggesting characters if you guys want! I will eventually try to get to all of them. :) Maybe some day I'll even do a painting or and we can use them for custom avatars!

I really liked your Deathstrike.
Suggestions:
The Mastermind Sisters (sans Pixie)
Spider-Woman
To help you with your anatomy Anna Raven, they have posable figures that you can buy from art supply stores that you can move into any pose to see the correct alignments and proportions.

Wow great drawings. I myself have tried to do what you were doing... though it takes me a lot of time to get one drawing done so I made my challenge a drawing a week... though i've fell off the wagon on that commitment!
A suggestion I have is to draw Hela. She has that one face mask that is quite elaborate with all those appendages on it. I tried drawing her the othher day and got annoyed with getting that mask put together. It should be a fun draw for you though!
