I haven't played the card game, but I *have* played the Game of Thrones board game. My brother, his girlfriend and I were only able to play three rounds of it before we got to the point of fistfights and breakups. You should play it sometime!

Oh wait I was thinking of the board game too - sorry - I got confused because the board game uses cards for all the characters. :) Sorry I haven't played the card game then assuming that's different.

But sixhours is right the board game is super fun. It gets crazy when the wildings attack. And yeh the players tend to actually get pissed at each other just like the characters in the novel do hehe.

Now I sort of want to get the board game...

So have we all been checking the progress of the show? It's looking AMAZING.

George R. R. Martin announced the release date for A Dance with Dragons on his blog: July 12th. He said it's a hard date. I'll take his word for it.

I have read about 400 pages of Moby Dick which I never read in school; however, I promptly put that down for now, and ran to the bookstore to buy A Dance With Dragons. I've already started it, I've waited YEARS for this book to come out so I can see what Tyrion and Daenerys were doing while A Feast For Crows was going on! So excited!

I just finished. Wun Weg Wun Dar Wun is officially the coolest name ever in a fantasy novel. I can't wait to see him on the tv series.

My only complaint is they need to provide a good map of Slavers Bay and the rest of Essos.

Finished "A Game of Thrones" last night, and despite this genre not being my normal, I loved it. Of course, I'm a bit saddened that my favorite characters have the a habit of dying but I thought it was really great. I have some minor gripes, but because I haven't finished the series, some of the stories I want to know might be told.

Although I enjoyed the fifth book in the series, I can't disagree with The Onion's take on it.

I just finished A Storm of Swords. I was going to take a break, but I decided to dive right into to Feast For Crows.

re-reading Dance with Dragons now.... WOW what a series!!!

on the Board Game - wife and I got it for Christmas. Played it with some friends. A complicated board game with a steep learning curve, but fun to take over Westeros! Make sure your playing with hardcore strategy game lovers, or else people will get bored.

Love the TV show, can't wait for April 1st to get here so season 2 can start.

Book series is incredibly intriguing. Theorizing with hardcore fans is always fun.

My personal theory: Forget the dragons, the vale, the lannisters, Tyrion, Targs, and Jon Snow. They are all just red herrings to keep you from the true hero of the tale: Brandon Stark. Children of the Forest and The Others pre-date the Targs. Likewise, Bran's greenseer "training" is far more important to the outcome of Westeros than dragons, mummers, gold, and sell swords. mark my words, Bran will be leading an army in the final battle.
The Thing: Didn't they come up with a cure for your kind?
Wolverine: You got a problem with mutants?
The Thing: I meant Canadians.

Started reading these only recently after loving the t.v. series, about halfway through A Storm of Swords. Enjoying the series overall but I was a bit disappointed at the use of actual magic starting in the second book.

I really hope Bran does something big for the series. TBH, his passages tend to interest me the least and feel a bit like filler at times.

My prediction for the series end: Jon Snow, revealed to be the son of Lyanna Stark and Rhaegor, who was taken in by Ned and raised as his bastard, marries Daenerys and they rule Westeros together.

A lot of people predict that, which is why it won't happen haha. Plus I hate that ending...it just doesn't feel right in terms of the series' tone.

Really? That's funny. Jon's parentage has been telegraphed from the beginning. If it turns out he is NOT the child of Lyanna and Rhaegor, I'd totally call foul and say Martin changed his mind while writing the series.

While Jon's parentage has been telegraphed since the beginning, I don't think it means that he and Dani need to get together....I don't know it just feels too....fairy tale for me. "Oh the handsome fan favorite and the beautiful fan favorite are destined to be together in the end" when I just don't see either even liking each other haha.

But that's just me...A lot of fans want this...Me not so much. I don't know who I want to rule Westeros. Part of me wants it to become seven separate kingdoms again...

But I can't really talk too much more about it, because you're only halfway through the third book. So chop chop, things are about to get good :).

As Martin has said many times, this is a fantasy story for adults, not kids. You wont find any fairy tell "Happily Ever Afters" in Westeros.

Savant, Bran's story really gets interesting in Dance with Dragons. I say interesting, but truthfully Bran is still a child and we see thigns from his POV. As a result he has some uneventful commentary on the magic of Westeros, since he doesn't have the experience or knowledge to know what to do with it.

I'm still trying to avoid spoilers, I haven't read Dances With Dragons yet.

I had the same thoughts regarding Jon Stark. I assumed that he wasn't truly Ned's son and belonged to Lyanna.  An ending with a marriage between himself and Dany would be too 'happy' for this author, and it seems to me that Jon is likely to keep his vow to the Black.  Especially since he's invested such a great deal of himself into that vow as it is. I also think Dany will fall eventually in time.

Savant, I also had the same thoughts regarding Bran's narratives, but at some point I did start to enjoy them if only because I didn't like some of the other POV character choices. I do enjoy the greensight aspect of the book and I'm curious to read the chapters where Melisandre is the narrative character since I would like some closure on her magic.

I sometimes entain the idea that somehow, through the Stark children this Kingdom will be salvaged. Ultimately, I don't think it really matters who 'wins' because eventually some other usurper will come calling and the game begins again...especially with all these infants and bastard children running around.

Perhaps it's b/c I am married but I don't really see marriage as a 'happy ending' Tongue, just a rational strategy for averting total destruction and achieving a semblance of peace, but I am sure there are dreadful PWP fan fiction sites devoted to those two characters. Whatever lull in bloodshed might be achieved will be tenous and I agree with Medium, it seems likely that the series will end with the beginning of a new game.
I have a lot more reading to do!

Hahaha.    I wish we had broken this thread up into independent threads dealing with each novel.  That way we could all talk about the various stages of reading we are at.

Jon Snow wont forsake his vows for his own family, let alone to rule 7 foreign Kingdoms and marry the Dragon princess his "father" fought so hard to de-throne.

Danny, Agon, Victorian, Jon Snow, Arriane, Tyrion, Bran, Sansa, Rickon, and Arya are the major players in the game of thrones. They are each set to inherit vast lands and titles. And each is capable of a marriage.

I just started Dances with Dragons. I am enjoying it so far, but this might be my least favorite group of viewpoint chapters. I'm not sure why, since I like them all but shifting between Tyrion, Dany, and Jon has not been that thrililng. I am just starting a chapter with a new narrative, and he disgusts me but hopefully I can get past his eating rats.

Note to self: Don't read chapters about people eating rats while you are slightly buzzed on the New York City subway system.
