Dog On It by Spencer Quinn is the next book up for discussion in UXN's official Book Club. Certain to appeal to our dog-loving forum members, this novel follows the story of Bernie, a down on his luck investigator and his canine companion Chet as they solve a mystery! Originally, I had suggested The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, but after finishing it several weeks ago, I am not going to devote my Book Club pick to it. (However, I will probably open another neglected book thread about it later tonight).

Anyway, I have  chosen another light, long weekend type book for our club that will hopefully add the humor, positivity, and fun that only a dog can. It being Thursday September 2, and considering the long weekend in the United States,  I think discussion will start by September 13th.

*Although if our normal readers are interested in this choice and indicate in this thread they have a copy of the book, we can certainly start earlier.

Fetch!

Thanks for continuing with this-I had dropped the ball (pun intended) with it, and I look forward to getting (or borrowing the book) and the following discussion. I'll also update the main thread in (another) attempt to keep the UNX Book Club from stagnating/vanishing.

I have a copy of the book, but had a busy weekend and wasnt' able to finish. Expect an update in a few days. Is anyone else reading this or is my light, upbeat fiction too boring for our normal political & religious topics?

Sorry, I'm balls-deep in Ayn Rand and some other stuff right now; I probably can't participate in this round of the UNX Book Club.
Why am I even listening to you to begin with? You're a virgin who can't drive.

I have finished reading it and it was a welcomed change from our more serious books. I'm happy to have a discussion/conversation about it when you finish it.

So I'm most finished with this. I picked this book because a coworker gave it to me and it seemed like a nice easy read. In many ways it was too easy. It isn't particularly thought provoking, so I apologize for a bum pick, but I just couldn't take anything with too serious of topic matter.

Sadly, I felt that this lacked a strong human element. It was refreshing and entertaining at first to read this book from a dog's perspective. The little things that make Chet happy made me appreciate the small, overlooked pleasures of life we neglect everyday. It was amusing to see that Chet couldn't remember the details or understand what certain human cues meant, but the author did a fantastic job broadcasting them to the reader.

The logical reader in me became a little annoyed with Chet's narrative style. And, this might seem absurd given the topical matter of the book but I was irritated that Chet's intelligence isn't standard throughout the book. For instance, Chet is capable of understanding Bernie's financial situation but is incapable of deciphering human motivation or similar human made standards.

I also had a small issue with the acts of heroism on Chet's part. Specifically rescuing Bernie from the edge of a cliff reminded me of a Disney fantasy.

Overall, this is a fun read for a weekend away or a road trip. I would have liked the author to explore more dog-centric emotions such as abandonment or separation anxiety. I'm not sure it's a great pic for discussion, but I needed a brain break.

I too required something lighter to read. My original review on Facebook was the following (I log the books I read):

"This detective story from the point of view of a dog (Chet) was cute and light. The narrative voice of the dog was wonderfully imagined-scatty and disjointed at time, ironically ignorant at others. The main story was solid without being special but the real charm comes in Chet’s telling."

I stand by my original review. Like you, I found the internal logical sometimes illogical but for me this only came out after I finished. I didn't mind Chet's Disney moment (great description)-this book wasn't strong enough as a detective story (see for example Poirot or Holmes) that this would feel out of place. Indeed, I would have almost been disappointed if Chet didn't do something significant plot-wise; otherwise, the only hook of the book would have been an interesting (and amusing) POV.

This book also reiterated that I am not really a physical animal-type of person. Animals are took illogical for me-I coped with family goldfish but that was probably my limit.

It's a decent light read, but I couldn't properly say it raised any great moral or ethical questions or was deep writing. Perhaps it is fair to say that everyone needs something light (to read) once in a while.
