So, I'm currently reading this book and I'm about a third of the way through. Has anyone read it? Any thoughts? Should I continue reading... its pretty depressing.

No. It continues to be depressing and miserable. Just rent last year's excellent adaptation instead; it condenses the misery into two hours.

Why am I even listening to you to begin with? You're a virgin who can't drive.

I agree. I read this a while back, before I even knew there was going to be a movie, because it won the Pulitzer prize. It makes me wonder how it won. Is it supposed to make us feel hopeless about the human race? Is it supposed to make us grateful that we haven't blown each other up yet? Is it supposed to inspire us to save the planet?
I did appreciate the man's motivations to protect his son, but the love a parent feels for a child and the fear of something happening to the child is pretty universal. It's something that could be incorporated into almost any story without reading a whole book of sheer depression and misery. Let's just say, I didn't enjoy it.
Oh, and Six is correct, the movie is faithful to the book, so you don't have to prolong the depression. I kept thinking Charlize had the right idea...

Me too. In fact, my advice in lieu of watching the movie instead of reading the book would have been to do exactly what she did. It's the quickest way to capture the essence of The Road.

I read the book twice after i watched the movie, i enjoyed it quite a lot, not in a fun way, i dont know whyn considering your reactions, i guess it was the father and boy relationship wich was so strong, and im dont consider myself a high thinker, but i read somewhere that it was about growing up, how we are shaped by our parents untill we are ready to be our own, wich works for me.
Also the movie is really good, and it proves how much of a good actor Viggo Mortensen is.

Supposed to be a classic. It's on my "to read" list.
