I would be surprised if they let you play as X-Men characters because of this sentiment. To tell a good story about the main character, they have to get you to be concerned about the main character. If you can play as other X-Men, you won't care about the new guy/gal. |
With the growth of the new character over time I'm wondering how they'll balance that out with the experience of the X-Men. Will the game basically play itself or will it separate off the X-Men from the newbie at key points in order to let them get some street cred on their own?

Yes, I was wondering this as well.
In XML1 with Magma, for example, I did enjoy playing as Amara, but you could customize her powers as you wished. Then, in other areas, you could play as X-Men. I didn't mind playing as one and then as the other, because I got a good feel for many characters. And then later on, I had a powered up Magma on my team!
So, maybe it will be in the style of XML1? If so, that would be great.

I'm more worked that the environments look incredibly last-gen than about the character art. You'd also have thought that Marvel would have learned a lesson from their last tatted-up mutant wannabe, Ink.

While the character does indeed look like the result of a tragic focus-group consensus on what cool is, people are really making a mountain of a molehill. Choose a different character if you don't like that one.
And I don't care about graphics so I'm not too concerned about that.

Oh i don't care about the guy, I'm definitely not picking him so I'm fine with how he looks, just disappointed in the very outdated graphics. Usually if the graphics are that bad in a next gen game, it doesn't bode well for gameplay and camera.

Hmm. I don't really care about graphics. But I sort of wish Marvel would team up with better people to make games. Like it'd be awesome (now that they are owned by Disney) if they made an X-Men game with Square/Enix.
And Surge! What a weird choice to be in the game.

On the other hand, it wouldn't be a comics-based game if there weren't people complaining about the art. We should at least be grateful that the style of art wasn't taken from Eric Canete's run with Luke Cage.

People tend to say they don't care about graphics. And that may be true for you guys who stated it above (I am not judging you individually even if I am a game artist by trade and you've totally hurt my feelings lol). But what I think people usually mean by that us they don't care about the graphics unless they are so bad they call attention to themselves. There are also certain games in which the graphics are intentionally minimalist or cartoony (most Nintendo titles, WoW, Minecraft) but that is a product of excellent art direction, not bad graphics.
I'm with XTreme here, in the sense that this game is clearly not one where the art style is going the minimalist route, so it could bode not so well for the product in general.
NOW that my ranting is done I will say marketing often finds a way to pick the absolute worst screenshots that present the game in the ugliest fashion so there is no need to go off the deep end, I am still intrigued by this game and look forward to more info.

Silicon Knights have made one of my most favourite games ever in Eternal Darkness, so there's no doubting their pedigree to be fair. So far the graphics don't look as bad as some of the criticism recevied thus far.

Not that bad at all.
Interestingly, they say that the new characters will be appearing in the comics as well.
Characters that emerge from Age of X, perhaps? - Carey is writing both, after all...

Ink was a really crap character but if they do a character like the tattoo guy from the Elektra film then I would be on board for that. Seriously give him powers similar to Tarot's and put loas of tattoos on his body like guns and animals ect. Just don't give him a cliche bad boy personality like Gambit, Wolverine or INK.

I didn't think the graphics were that bad, as compared to all the complaints. I was expecting worse, so maybe that's why! But then again, I am no expert.
Sneak Peak? Did I see Quicksilver in a few of those shots? The costume appeared to be different and with some yellow in it, but it looked more like Quicksilver to me than Speed or anyone else, unless it is a new character. Did anyone hear about a speedster appearing?

I guess I should clarify about the graphics since I was the one being grouchy. They don't look bad per se, so much as uninspired. All I am seeing from those screenshots is inside a drab concrete building and outside a boring looking snow covered bunker. Like I say it could be the screenshots they chose but it looks like the game is going to mostly take place inside of military bases and parking garages. Too many games do this these days, they have the ability to push your imagination and all they do is build levels in ugly brown and grey buildings and cold snowy outdoor environments.

I'd say you need to work with a speedster for that mission. You have Surge with the X-Men and Quicksilver if choose to be a member of the Brotherhood.

Finally! A MU speedster character.
I always wanted Quicksilver in a game, but never thought we would see him. With all the character mystery surrounding Destiny, we were not shown anything about a speedster/Quicksilver and then Presto! Pietro is speeding around in the frames!
Very nice indeed!

Could the tattoos possibly be the product of the in game character modification system. I think these screens are too early to base judgement on. These may be very old screen shots, and doesn't the game come out next fall? If its a crappy game its a crappy game. Marvel has made enough of those. Is anyone going to be stunned if this sucks?

?? Do you mean Dr. McCoy, as in 'Bones' McCoy?? That seems to be his line.

Yeah this I what I mean too. Graphics are nothing a huge thing for me, but these graphics just look like they didn't try and bland background and bland level design usually equal uninspired controllers, repetitive gameplay and bad camera work. But I'll wait and see. Fingers crossed. We know the story will be good!

I bet it'll look better as it nears release. The models look clippy and the textures are meh, but I can't see it looking that way when it comes out. Gamers are too focused on the visual these days for the game to get to the market as-is.
