Just finished reading this...Now I only read the World War Hulk series so ignoring all tie-ins just the main story...

If Civil War was the big kinda smart summer blockbuster than World War Hulk was just straight block-busting...
Having followed the Hulk's journey in Planet Hulk, I felt very justified for what happened here. I was on the Hulk's side. Of course I knew he wasn't going to kill anyone but seeing him kick so much butt was just great. The Hulk had achieved happiness and the idea that his "friends" ruined it pissed me off. I wanted to see the fight against "Black Bolt" but seeing him take on Dr. Strange/Zom, the Fantastic Four, Iron Man, Ares, and finally the Sentry was pretty awesome. The reveal that it was truly Miek's fault was a nice reveal that I didn't see coming. And Rick still trying to save the Hulk (which ties back to the Bruce becoming the Hulk because of Rick) was a nice way to tie things together.

That first issue where the Stark Tower fell...it was so big and visceral. I liked seeing the heroes just kinda fight and fight. I know the story was very simple and just "there". But it felt very Golden Age because of it. I loved the Warbound (still do), so seeing them take the fight to the Marvel heroes was entertaining.

So anybody else's thoughts on World War Hulk?

It's funny but I look at how this was a "mini-event" between Civil War and Secret Invasion. Not as many tie-ins and not as earth-shattering. But you look at how well it was written and the whole idea of "we exiled one of our own" and I think THIS should have set off Civil War not the SHRA.
Imagine if they had done WWH then for about a year afterwards there is all this tension between Steve and Tony as well as lesser heroes about whose fault it really was. The Illuminati are outed. Tony holds some big press conference and as he is spin-doctoring about how the Avengers are united and how he wants everyone to focus on who are the villians Steve just walks out on him mid-speech in front of all the cameras. sh*t goes down and everyone is fighting each other over who should even be in the Avengers and the Four and teams splinter.

Dust settles and when America sees how inherently violent the hero community is THAT is what sets off the SHRA. You still get the Initiative era, you can still have Tony lead it. But something more important than "The D-List Forgotten New Warriors done screwed up big time" is what pushes things.

To me WWH and even some of it's tie-ins like the X-Men and Gamma Corps mini was some of the smartest writing Marvel has done in ages. It's about thinking for yourself and that sometimes no one is a clear cut right.
Alex I do everything like a hawk.
This isn't DC Comics -- Marvel continuity doesn't die out if you don't water it often enough.
The whole Batman idea is a very childish response to childhood trauma.

I'm looking to jump into Hulk through tpbs. I was wondering where a good point to jump into would be? Planet Hulk, War World Hulk, etc? I'm not wanting to start at the beginning, thanks.

Planet Hulk is the quintessential Hulk story IMO. And a lot of WW Hulk will be a bit confusing without some knowledge of Planet Hulk. So I would pick up the Planet Hulk TP and start there.

I have to agree with Anne...it's probably the defining Hulk story for a whole generation of readers and everything that Greg Pak does with the story is started there.

I loved Planet Hulk,, a great super-hero sword and sandals tale, I was really sad with what lead up to WWH. I know the status quo has to be restored and crossovers created, but I would have loved if Hulk/Banner lived happily ever after on that planet.

As I get ready to jump into the Hulk are there any big stories maybe before Planet Hulk that would be good? I remember Loeb being on the book in the 90s I think.

I wasn't really keen on this event, I mostly read it as Hulk and his Warbound mangling other heroes who doesn't have a chance. I mean even Elloe who doesn't have any powers and only moderate fighting skills takes out Spider-Man, Echo and Ronin in like a panel each.
I did like the X-men tie in though, sure Hulk was smashing them as well, but they at least put up a fight!
I do think i need to read it again too se if it's better than my memory say it was!

Elloe actually did have super strength. The thing is that on her planet she was "normal" but you have to remember that a regular pinkskin Saakarian (?) had a baseline strength far greater than a normal human. It's one thing Pak talked about in itnerviews about the world.
