If we name it 'boobies' we'll get a LOT more traffic though.

Hey guys,

I've been keeping up with this thread, just trolling.

I agree with a lot of reasons mentioned as to why THOIN died off, and have a few of my own to add in. Things to be weary of in the future.

First off, we're all getting older, having new chapters of our lives. I know as soon as I got into film, 90% of my free time was taken. So while I want to write, and WOULD write, I just didn't feel the need to put my creative energy into something that I felt like was almost unwelcome. I would so love to pick up 617 again, or to pick up my universe X-G:U(2) again. Roman and I had so many ideas. But Roman sort of fell off the band wagon, and I couldn't do it by myself. I'm not sure where his head was in that department. We'd make a lot of plans but wouldn't follow through, which was frustrating. But yeah, it's sort of like... I didn't feel like I had any support behind me, so I wasn't going to put any effort into it. Add to that the lack of feedback, and well... it was just a bit underwhelming.

Another issue to add to that - advertising. While a lot of people were just naturally moving on in their lives (which really can't be held against them), there wasn't any fresh blood being brought in. I was very young when I started here. I think I was 14 or 15 when I started writing 617 (and thought I was the sh*t for being accepted). SO MUCH has changed since then, but we aren't really getting that "new generation" that is almost necessary. Look at it as a metaphor. Stew start 617, and then there was the heap of general titles. That was the Stan Lee era. Then when 617 expanded and All*Star and X-M were brought in, that was sort of the Claremont era. Right now, we're in the 90's era where everything nearly dies out. Let's pick it up with the 2000's era, and get sh*t rolling.

I've been working with Booty, and while I'm very busy IRL right now, I can find time to write. But a lot of it is support and feedback related I think, for a lot of people (myself included). I don't know much about Marvel Omega or the Anthology sites. What I do know is, I was used to getting sh*tloads of feedback. And then suddenly, none. I write for myself every day, yeah. But a big part of our community here was that we were a support system for one another. That's just how we worked. We're not Marvel Omega or Anthology. We're THOIN, and we always worked in a different way than any other fan fiction site. That's what made this so special to me, and why I didn't give a f**k about writing for any other site (no offense, of course). I might've shown interest a few times, but when I saw how disconnected it felt, it didn't want any part of it. I love the community feel here. And I know I was a little sh*thead a lot of the times (I've since done some anger management, I'll have you know :D ), I still loved everyone. It was my online family here, and then everyone went away. I turned here for an escape from reality. I had a rough childhood, adolescence, and teenhood. Very rough. And I'm not going to throw any details out, but here was home. I'd love that same sense again. I think we should totes get cracking.

EDIT: Man... all my posts have been deleted. I look like such a noob.

Hearts and Stars, Kevin!

For what it's worth, I'm sorry about never getting my all*star title off the ground that we were supposed to crossover. If it's any consolation, doing the Rachel/Cable/Nimrod crossover with you was the only thing that excited me about my title and was the only part of it I really wanted to write lol. (I don't even know if you remember any of this, but I feel bad)

I have, however, learned that working in Shared universes or trying to do on-goings is just not for me. So for now, I think I'll just try independent one-shots and maybe a mini-series somewhere down the line. Let's see if I can finish a storyarc ha ha.

I've started my one-shot. There are plans for a sequel one-shot but I'm just trying to do this story in a self-contained way that if I never do the other one-shot, nobody will feel short-changed or like they are missing part of the story. I don't really know if anybody will like it honestly, but it's not Marvel/DC and I think THOIN needs more of that.

Haha, I totally forgot about it until now. No, it's totally cool, don't feel bad. It was ages ago, and I gave up on my All*star title as well, for whatever reason. Everything I wrote for All*star was apparently taken down anyway, haha

Awww, that sucks. I really loved your florist Tabitha (especially her outfit) and the Lorna/Warren banter.

I like both yours and booty's writing/tastes so I'm excited for what you guys come out with.

I can't believe you remember that, haha.

I'd still love to write a Polaris solo. I just wouldn't know where it would fit in or what the long term story would be.

I know, right? Kevin, every time you plot a Polaris story the universe it's for kind of dies :(. I totally want to see you writing a Daria/Polaris story :)

I'm just excited to be writing X-23 :-D

It's because no universe can handle how awesome I write her. Hahaha. I really enjoyed the Daria/Polaris dynamics. Just at the mention of it, there are thousands of ideas that come to mind that I could work with. Gah.

This post is getting REALLY LONG, so I'm going to break it into topics. Read what you like.

The Navigation Bar

Overall, I think the Navigation Bar on the left could use a facelift. "Home" should remain at the top, but I think that "Submissions" and "Forums" should be right under. If anyone is coming to the site to read, they know what they're looking for - but if we're trying to get people interested in writing and posting feedback, we need to make doing so STUPID easy. Kicking those two up higher on the list brings them to the viewers attention WAY more.

I also think that the individual submission info for X-M, 617, and All*Star should be moved to the individual uni itself rather than on the Submission page. To the best of my knowledge, none of the unis are accepting submissions any more, and the less clutter and info there is on the Submissions page, the better for new writers.

I'm not really sure if we need an "Articles & Columns" area unless we're actually going to REALLY do something here. Yeah, there are a few interviews on the page, but I honestly think that's us stroking our own egos more than it is presenting anything worth reading to an audience. I hate to say we need staff writers, but I think if we're going to have a section about Articles and Columns, we need to embrace that. Perhaps some kind of monthly feature on writing, character building, universe building, playing in a different setting (like how CoE uses a fantasy setting as opposed to modern day, what positives that has, what negatives that has) and the like. We could rotate writers or, if a writer has an idea for something solid and steady, give them their own column.
I'm basically thinking on ANN (Anime News Network) and how they have staff writers who review anime figures, who talk about older anime, who review manga, and on and on. When I think of a site with articles and columns, THAT is what I'm thinking. Maybe even give out prompts to the audience and just do something on that - my favorite thread over at Marvel Omega is "What do you want to see?/Case for a Title". Nothing like engaging the readers/writers AND getting that spark of an idea out there.

I also like the Independant Imprint or Independant Titles as some new names for the General Section, which should come next. I prefer "Independant Titles" simply because I think think saying it's an "imprint" implies some sort of blanket theme over the section. When I think Imprint I think of Vertigo or MAX or Marvel Knights - where all the books have some sort of uniting theme.

THEN comes "family books" - which should include the 617, All*Star, and X-M, at least. They shouldn't be on the Navigation bar at all IMO. NONE of the universes are updating and I think we have some kind of moritorium on the 617 don't we? If it isn't going to update, we don't need to promote it - unless someone wants to do a column on failed/collapsed/closed titles, which could be interesting. I also suggest "The Multiverse" as a new name for the "Family Section". It implies that there is going to be more than on universe (which there are) and I think anyone who is reading fanfic is familiar with the concept enough NOT to be put off.

I think then should come "Fan Art" and "Custom Figures". Personally, I think that the submission info for fan art should also be on the page itself, simply for sake of ease. If someone starts to peruse the fan art section and gets inspired, we can save them the click of getting to the Submissions page.
Also, as an artist myself, of my concerns sending my art in is what file type/size should it be in. I know the usual size I present my work at, but is that cool on THOIN? Is there a set size? Or type? I think think this needs to be made clear. It is part of the reason I've never sent work in before.

Tawner's Suggestions/Site Design

I see what he means on the font size - as the latest two updates on THOIN have different fonts. It just presents a sloppy front page.

Considering, as writers, we have no control over the webpage itself, I can't help but wonder if it's necessary to have that banner-ad at the top of the THOIN mainpage? I quite like the THOIN logo where it is, but if we could throw in the banner logos there, then put the company logos in a nice quartered-box design at the end, I think that would be pretty good looking.
I am familiar with designing sites (as I did my own. shameless plug: www.slightlyoffstudios.com updates MWF), but I also built mine from the ground up in Dreamweaver. I don't honestly know how to affect change on THOIN's site, what program they used OR style of coding OR who to talk to. If someone can learn the dimensions, I could even create banners - themed or otherwise.

Banner size

We really need to contact who ever does the actual site work for THOIN for this. >.< Again, I wouldn't mind creating some banners myself - perhaps even themed for a book, if the author is so interested - but I have no idea what size to work at.

Tagline

If our main selling point is the ability to do what you want - within reason - I think that's what we should focus on. "The House of Ideas - Where Anything Goes" "The House of Ideas - No editors, no continuity, no problems" or something. "The House of Ideas - Putting the "fan" back in fanfic."

And finally

@Polaris - I also remember when I was let into the 617 and yeah, I got the same ego boost. : ) Not to sound old, but good times, good times.

Grief came up with some good stuff there. I think on top of 617, X-M, and All Star being in the Family/Multiverse/whatever we call, we should probably have all universes including COTA and any others stay in the Multiverse and not have a thing on the navigation menu. Having universes added on there as they get bigger, while a cool thing for bigger titles, makes too much clutter up there and in a way draws attention to those over other fiction that might not be a universe but be just as good. Since we're a site full of a vast plethora of titles that span so many universes none should really get a foot up over the others.

Started work on a Giant Sized issue that will catch up on all happenings in the Intolerance universe over the six month gap between issue #8 of Uncanny and the start of new titles. X-Factor will spin out of events in that giant size as the two original issues will be discontinued and hopefully stricken from the site.

Who else has had their creative fires stoked lately?

I have plotted out a first arc for a potential Ult. X-Men style title. Have to say its a nice break from the stuff I usually write in my spare time (journal articles Dead)

Well, to be fair do we keep 617, X-M and All*Stars are no longer active. Should we move it to Discontinued because that's a major thing I'll be doing this weekend, moving a lot of the inactive titles to the discontinued section(maybe we can rename it The Dead Zone, haha).

So Scotty, you'd say make a thread section for Universes? That might not be a bad idea, but so far the only "universe" would be COTA and that's hardly a universe. It's just a really, really long series(with really, really, long episodes). I'll put up COTA in whatever the family section will be for now though.

And yeah my creative fire has been stoked for a while. Been writing a bunch of stuff. Finally writing the COTA finale. Finished with half of it, have the other half to go. I have an episode on my computer that's been finished for MONTHS,  so I guess I'll finally get that up haha.

But yeah I'm excited for COTA again and definitely for season 4 because I have the whole season plotted out already. I'm just going to wrap up this season(FINALLY) and continue onto the next!

@Grief: I see what you mean about Imprint. As for the changing fonts. It's the wonky html thing for the site. It changes fonts on me all the time. It's massively annoying. I like your ideas for articles though I'd like to continue interviews. Let's stroke our egos. I loved Daniel's interviews, I loved getting insight into characters and plots straight from the source. So maybe we can have articles about that too, like "What inspired me..." or something of the sort.

And Kev, I'd love to see you start writing again!! You know I'd be there to give you feedback :)

@Mackers: WRITE!!! Please!!! I'd love to see your take on an Ultimate X-men title!!!

Well I meant moving all of them just under the family area, whatever we change the name too that way all things from the small universe to the big universe to the person just writing one title are all on equal footing when it comes to looking for them.

As for 617, X-M, and All Star they could go in discontinued but then again they are pretty hefty universes and were parts that alongside the general section defined the site for quite some time. Not sure how many people look in the discontinued stuff. Its a toughie on where to put them really.

Interviews would be great again. Should have one person like Daniel do them on an ongoing basis as he can do them. Spread it around and just randomly pick different people from all the different areas of the fan fiction site we have. Articles would be a very good thing to have going. I can think of quite a few things fan fiction wise I'd be interested in writing about and presenting for articles.

I like the "Dead Zone".

I also agree with putting universes in with the "family" section.

The theme is everybody is independent to write what they want. Maybe it's a stretch to justify, but I like "imprint". It sounds cooler than "titles" or "section" and I'm stuck on alliteration.

I don't think we should have "Where Anything Goes" as a tagline because that's definitely not true. We don't allow movie/tv/book fanfiction or original fiction.

Both of my previous attempts at ongoings obviously can be added to the Dead Zone.

Soooo? Any word on what the size of the banner could/should be? Have you talked to Tawner, Xtreme? I don't want to keep him waiting too awful long for a response.

Edit: Yes, my creative fires have been stoked. I've already started my one-shot that will be Halloween themed. I've been building a patio all week and helping my gparents with a yard sale, so I've been pretty wiped out. I'm hoping my energy is recovered by this weekend and then I can really plunge head long into it and probably finish by next week.

You can leave the universes to me. 617, All*Star X, All*Star Reborn, and X-M are a lot of issues to just cram into the discontinued section. I can move them there without moving any titles from their sections.

EDIT: I've done some changes as far as the universes are concerned. Since all four universes are such large universes I left them in their sections and removed them from the Navigation Bar and added links to them in the Family Section/Multiverse Imprint. Xtreme I changed the names of the GS and FS, feel free to change them.

I think the News Archive and Articles & Columns sections should be combined, and if anyone wants we can start a series where every month or so writers give previews of what they're working on, possibly interviews if we decide to go back to that, writing tips, character/titles (actual comics) discussions to help new writers. A THOIN magazine of sorts. That's something I might be interested in working on, since I no longer get to play around with the appearance of All*Star.

And I've seen Mackers plans for Ultimate X-Men and I need to see him write it as well! Now to get myself going on Avengers.

As well as a banner could we pimp out the site visually in other ways? Its mainly all Text, and isn't visually that inviting.  Could we look at possibly using more images, or interesting "comic style" fonts, like a lot of the other fan fiction sites do?

Also we have an extension collection of headshots, and folks like Binaryan create more upon request. If people wanted headshots included with their stories is that some thing we could do? When people submit their stories that could also provide the headshots, to save the editors trawlling for them.

PS I realize of course that we actually need people capable of creating these things, but I'm just putting it out there.

Wow, the Navigation Bar looks MUCH cleaner, Justin. Thumbs%20Up

@Gibbering. I plan on releasing image teasers with whatever I write. (I encourage others to do the same, it's fun!) I don't know if there would be copyright issues with it (guess Josh/Justin could tell us or the admins) but maybe we could put those images in the Update Bar thing like they do on UXM.Net's main page. We seem to be operating on the same format so I don't think it would be that hard to do.

Again, a new logo would be awesome, especially if we could make it like the ones UXN has.

I'd like to do an interview with the Editors. We could cover a wide variety of topics as well as do some FAQ type stuff but make it more exciting to read.

Like I said, my Vertigo one-shot will be slightly Halloween themed. Does anybody else want to do some Halloween/Horror-y stuff? Maybe we could make a themed update out of it.

I also came up with ideas for a possible Endless (from Sandman) one-shot or mini-series last night that would center around Delirium and Desire.

An FAQ idea is good, though I wonder if we should include it in Submissions or on it's own place on the navigation bar as it will hopefully answer lots of questions about submissions and other things writers need to know.

I'll be gone until tomorrow but when I get back I'll fix up the Navigation Bar some more, fix some things in submissions, and help come out with some of the Frequently Ask Q's I get.

When cleaning up the General/Independent Section X-Men: Excelsiors and Excalibur can be moved to the discontinued section. I wont be pursuing either.
