Darkstar was killed in New X-Men (1st series) #130 by Fantomex, after she was possessed by Weapon XII. The Russian government used her genetic material and the cameo gem she was spiritually bonded with to recreate her powers in two successive women, Darkstar II and III. When Darkstar III was killed, and her soul consumed by a Dire Wraith, Laynia's connection to her cameo gem became powerful enough for her to possess the Wraith and return to a semblance of life. This occurred in Darkstar and the Winter Guard #3.
