Originally, Arkady's death factor only ended the lives of others. After being transformed into Omega Red, the carbonadium coils allow him to actually absorb the lifeforce into him, for a rejuvenating effect. Unfortunately, Wolverine and Team X interrupted his bio-engineering before it was completed, denying Arkady the C-Synth (Carbonadium Synthesizer) necessary for stabilizing the interaction between his implants and his mutation. As a result, the death factor actually can "back up" in his system, so that if Red doesn't use his death factor on victims often enough, the effect will feedback and he'll begin feeding off of his own lifeforce.
