Sole X-Men title emerging from Secret Wars revealed to be animated-exclusive series, X-Men ‘92 Forever

Fresh off the reveal of the "All-New, All-Different Avengers," its first post-Secret Wars lineup, Marvel has unveiled the cast and creative team behind its first—and only—post-Secret Wars X-Men title, "X-Men ’92 Forever."

Yes, you read that right: "X-Men ’92 Forever," a spiritual successor to X-Men: The Animated Series, will be the only X-Men property spinning out of Secret Wars.

Written by Chris Sims (ComicsAlliance) and animated by 20th Century Fox Animation, "X-Men ’92 Forever" will feature a classic cast of X-Men as they make the leap back to the small screen and carry the torch for the last of the mutants in the Marvel Multiverse.

“We hate to reveal this so early, but to calm the nerves of some of our more vocal readers, we wanted them to know that we are not, in fact, using Secret Wars as an opportunity to cancel the X-Men,” said Marvel Editor-in-Chief Axel Alonso. “Instead, we are using it as an opportunity to cancel the X-Men comics and transfer everything else to this animated series under the control Fox. It’s the best of both worlds!”

According to Alonso, the X-Men from the Secret Wars miniseries "X-Men ’92" (also written by Sims) will be the X-Men team that wins the Secret Wars on Battleworld and therefore be the only group that earns its right to continue existing. “Really, I wish it didn’t have to be this way, but that’s just how it played out. It’s out of our hands,” Alonso added. “You’d be surprised at how hard it is to control what happens on Battleworld.”

With the cancelation of the rest of the X-line, "X-Men ’92 Forever" will be the one and only place to go to follow the adventures of Marvel’s (but now Fox's) Merry Mutants. That doesn’t mean you should expect it to be the exact same show it was in the early 90’s, though.

“Although we plan on keeping some of the show’s classic elements, such as its theme song, its clunky animation style and the vocal talent of Iona Morris as Storm, we are shaking up the characters a bit so it stars the original cast of Chris Yost's  'Amazing X-Men',” writer Sims said, a roster that includes Wolverine, Beast, Storm, Nightcrawler, Northstar, Iceman and Firestar.

“I think this is a great compromise! Marvel no longer has to worry about the X-Men, fans who complained about how unmanageable the line has become now have a streamlined, go-to source for X-Men stories, readers who grow up on the series will get to revisit the show they loved as a kid, and Fox gets total control of the X-Men franchise until the end of time. What could be better?” Alonso added. “Are you guys excited?”

Are we excited? Does a mallrat love chili fries?

"X-Men ’92 Forever," the X-Men's last desperate gasp to remain in publication, will air on Saturday mornings at 10 a.m. on the Fox network for three weeks, at which point Fox will start moving it to various other timeslots with little to no advance notice, thus ensuring its swift cancelation.
