Chevaliers Squad

Gambit’s squad wore modified versions of the standard X-Men training uniform, excluding Foxx who was given a more individual costume.

A Chevalier is a type of French knight/aristocrat, presumably a nod to Gambit's heritage. The team only had five members, including Foxx. Bling and Onyxx retained their powers post M-Day but Onyxx was later killed by Wither when he was corrupted by Selene. He was seen revived on Krakoa during the second Hellfire Club Gala. Rainboy was presumably either depowered and killed by William Stryker's bombing or he underwent the Crucible, as he has been seen again with his powers on Krakoa. Flubber has not reappeared.

The Chevaliers were not included in the yearbook one-shot and the squad name was later revealed in Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe A to Z #13.

First appearance: X-Men (2nd series) #171

Instructor:

Gambit (Remy Lebeau)

First Appearance: Uncanny X-Men Annual (1st series) #14

Powers: convert an object's stored potential energy into explosive kinetic energy upon contact, hypnotic charm causing others to trust whatever he says, extendable bo staff

Notes:

  • Given his well-documented “beauty,” it was an interesting choice to place only mutants with physical mutations with Gambit. Possibly Gambit requested this himself, given his role in the mutant massacre, which primarily resulted in the deaths of mutants who could not pass in public like his squad. Possibly, it was an atonement of sorts for him.

Members

Bling! (Roxanne Washington)

First appearance: X-Men (2nd series) #171

Powers: crystallized rock body endows her with increased durability and the ability to blast off small portions of rock from her skin

Notes:

  • Bling is a lesbian, having expressed interest in both “Foxx” and Mercury.
  • She formed a bond with Rogue, who rescued her following her kidnapping by Emplate.
  • She was up for the X-Men vote in the second Hellfire Club Gala.
  • She is the daughter of two celebrities, Roy "Daddy Libido" Washington and Angel "Sexy Mutha" Depres, both Hip-Hop stars. She appeared in their music videos and had been targeted in early childhood by kidnappers. Presumably, this ever-present stress prepared her well for life as an X-Men student.
  • Of the Chevaliers, Bling! Is without a doubt the member with the most prominence following their introduction.

Flubber (Nick Shelley)

First appearance: X-Men (2nd series) #171

Powers: bizarre physiology gives him heightened agility, abnormally large hands, and a rubbery body allowing him to spring great heights and distances

Foxx (Raven Darkholme)

First appearance: Ms. Marvel #16 (as Raven Darkholme), X-Men (2nd series) #171 (as Foxx)

Powers: (as Foxx) demonstrated heightened agility, fangs, and night vision

Notes:

  • Foxx was an identity assumed by Mystique to infiltrate the Xavier Institute and “intervene” in Gambit and Rogue’s relationship. Foxx’s appearance was selected specifically to get under Gambit’s skin.

Onyxx (Sidney Green)

First appearance: X-Men (2nd series) #171

Powers: uneven granite body gives him superhuman strength and resistance to physical injury

Notes:

  • Onyxx expressed a romantic interest in Foxx when she first appeared at the Institute.
  • Onyxx was murdered by his classmate Wither when he was serving the eternal Selene. He was resurrected on Krakoa.
  • Onyxx was an orphan from New Jersey. He was never adopted due to clumsiness and chronic bed-wetting. To attempt to avoid bed-wetting, he started to avoid liquids, resulting in severe dehydration and depression. Eventually, his mutation developed and he was given a home at the Xavier Institute.

Rain Boy (Carl Aalston)

First appearance: X-Men (2nd series) #171

Powers: appears to be a being of living water held in a containment suit, able to expel his liquid mass as pressurized streams from his hands

Notes:

  • Rain Boy has reappeared during the Krakoan age and has been featured in New Mutants (4th series).
  • It seems likely that he was one of the students who were depowered and then killed by Stryker, only to be revived on Krakoa.
